The closest decent resort to NYC is Hunter Mountain which is about two hours drive. It has 1600 ft vertical and quite a few black diamonds. The skiing there can be excellent though it gets crowded on the weekends. Several other sji areas in the area include (in order of difficulty) Windham, Plattekill, Bellayre, Camelback (PA), Mountaincreek (NJ) Shawnee (PA). Vermont is 4-6 hours and offer Kilington, Stowe mad River Sugarbush Stratton and my favorite Jay Peak. Of course you could be in Salt Lake in 6 hours and on the slope in 7 if you are so inclined.

Actually the Closest is Mountain Creek in NJ but that's only around a 900 foot vertical drop. The Closest "Real Mountain" is Hunter in the Catskills -- but this gets really crowded. A lot of people go to Vermont, but Killington IS NOT the closest mountain to NYC in Vermont, that would be Mount Snow...then Stratton and Okemo...I like Okemo, Stratton gets a lot of CT preppie types. Mt. Snow is a couple of hours closers to NYC than Killington.

If flying is an option go out west, Colorado, Utah, or Montana. Its alot better then skiing in New York. You can't bet the snow out there.

"decent" is relative... but...

Pocono Mountains - Camelback -2 hour drive)
Hunter Mountain - 2 hour drive
