When you watch cable with the volume all the way up, you can barely hear the TV. But when we are watching a DVD the sound is great. What can we do to fix the cable sound? Something, somewhere is crossed.

If you want better sound you need to invest in a home theater.

I recommend you read the following book available just about anywhere. It would behoove you to investigate.

Are you using a cable box or hooking the cable up directly? If cable box, make sure the cable box volume is set correctly.

Assuming you have your TV wired correctly to your receiver,
are you using the correct input on your receiver?
Are you using the corresponding surround mode on your receiver?
