Why do atheists spend so much time in religion and spirituality forums? Also, why are you so angry at Christians for being Christians? You spend so much time putting them down. Lets say what we believe in is not real in the end. What the heck is wrong with living a good life, praying, and the 10 commandments? A good Christian is a peacful type who just wants to be a good person. There is nothing wrong with that, no matter WHAT happens in the end. Sure, there are hypocrites and other extreme annoyances, but they don't make up the majority. I am a Christian with an atheist friend and I think she is one of the sweetest people on earth. We may not end up in the same place after death but there is no reason to hate on someone for wanting to believe what they believe. If you are going to be an atheist that doesn't mean you have to be a miserable human being. If you were so secure with your decision you wouldn't spend so much time here putting those who do down. Now would you?

I knew you all would be mean. If you feel you are not in this category then don't take offense. If you are, don't prove me right. Answer truthfully.

I am very tolerant. I have friends who ahve no beliefs and they do not wuestion me nor I them. I am reffering to all of the nasty comments atheists leave on people's questions. Again, if you are not on of them why take offense?

AHH to many answers! So many people proving my point. I am strong of faith, I don't "hang out" in religious forums, I answer questions in them on occasion as you can see by my answers section. I am not offended by people who believe in nothing, I just feel badly for those who try to ask people qestions and get the barrage of angry atheists after them. You all are SO fired up it's almost funny, but really it's just so sad. Insults insults insults and never an intelligable answer. Just what I expected from the majority.

The reason why some atheist put down on Christians is because many are hypocrites and do not live what they preach or believe in.

Quick question: Are the following accounts all the same person?
*hahaha LOL
*qwerty
*Luke Skywalker
*mikalina
*Quantum Tigger

What the hell is this "drink" thing about - some kind of inside joke? It's boring.

Okay, back to the real question:
I'm a sort of semi-atheist (not agnostic) but I like this forum because I'm interested not so much in religion as I am by people's beliefs in general, and THIS is the place where people talk about their beliefs.

Religious people often say some very strange things and it's hard not to react when someone says something outrageous like "only Christians go to Heaven and everyone else goes to Hell" or "masturbation is a sin".

I guess it's the Talk Show effect: you just can't help being drawn into the zany antics of the guests on the show and shouting in protest at the screen.

Short answer: because, Christian, because!

Slightly longer response: I agree that no person, be it atheist or theist, should put down another knowingly and maliciously.

Longer response: I think very few atheists would actually have a problem with Christians (or those of any other faith) if the following were true:

a. Christians did not impose their beliefs on us directly (through evangelical preaching) and indirectly (through an imposition on societal law).

b. Christians were perceived as actually exhibiting the good morals of their fundamental teachings. We might disagree on whether abortion is a killing method but how can anyone take seriously a broad group of people that allows the continuation of known pedophilia, a preference of militaristic solutions over diplomatic ones, etc. ("Christians" - although I know not everyone is of a single denomination). I know not all (or even a majority of) Christians accept these things but Christianity is constantly used to justify behavior which is universally accepted to be immoral.

Extreme answer: In an extreme sense, if there is no God theists are actually holding economic progress back by imposing social norms that prohibit the opening of businesses on Sunday mornings (used to be all day), contributing money to churches instead of other worthwhile charities, etc. I don't hold this view but it IS an argument for why Pascal's wager fails.

Insulting question.

I am not an atheist, I am Wiccan.

You are WRONG to assume that just because someone is an atheist, he or she should not have interest in Religion and Spirituality forums. Why are you wrong: Most people who are NOT Christians, and who come to this forum do so because they enjoy the conversation and like to learn and debate.

If you do not want atheists and other non-Christians in the forums you are in, go to a Christian only website.

Otherwise, you should play nice and remember that EVERYONE has a right to be here - and what you think about their participation isn't important.

I just have to come here to laugh at the atheists who tell anyone who wants to discuss religion that they should be in the mythology section. Look at the responses here to see how many suggest that ONLY atheists have the right to be here.
Sigh.....
and yet we are told that everyone else is picking on them. Go figure. Yes, we all tend to generalize. Maybe it is that a true atheist would not be here and we are only hearing from a small sampling.

But, ALL people should try tolerance.

Your rant is almost too pathetic to deserve a reply, but I'll give it a shot.

1. We hang out here because R&S issues affect us. Just consider what GWB and his right-wing fanatics are trying to do to the U.S.

2. We are not angry at Xtians. We try to educate them. In case you didn't bother to notice, the anger is demonstrated by Xtians such as yourself. As your own playbook states: "whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap."

3. "I don't "hang out" in religious forums": Really? Seems you are here casting about hate to me.

4. "I am not offended by people who believe in nothing": Apparently, you are. Of course, it is YOUR assumption that atheists believe in nothing. That is incorrect. We don't believe in the existence of gods. That says NOTHING about the things in which we DO believe.

5. "I just feel badly for those who try to ask people qestions and get the barrage of angry atheists after them.": If you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen and stop asking incendiary biased questions.

6. "You all are SO fired up it's almost funny, but really it's just so sad. Insults insults insults and never an intelligable answer.": You, apparently, cannot read, either.

7. "Just what I expected from the majority.": Ditto for us from self-righteous Xtians. Funny, how other religious types rarely display the vitriol you Xtians do.

ADDENDA:

Deuce: Your ignorance is manifest. One does not get angry at something that does not exist.

Michaela C: I've yet to see you make any cogent point.

PhotoMe: You've not been paying attention. Check Item 7 and the quotation at the end of Item 2.

: "Because they get their marching orders from the devil" How moronic.

lord_darkclaw: No, they are not the same person. Yes, it is an inside joke, if you consider something openly posted on Y!A "inside". Boring? Your opinion. Mine?

Vodka martini, shaken not stirred, please.

** DRINK ** to the narrow-minded, thin-skinned Xtians! Long may they rant!

I am a Christian and I am here simply because I stumbled upon it out of boredom. . .I continue to stay here because I find it interesting and entertaining. .. .and there are some people here that I really enjoy.. . .I figure many people of different beliefs are here for the same reason.

And, I don't think Atheist are here to hate on Christians, I think many times the cross words come from both sides and are provoked. Do not generalize all of the atheist on here by a few that may be rude all the time. . .just as I would hope to not be generalized with all the hateful Christians on here.

We spend a lot of time in Religion & Spirituality because Atheism is a philosophical position that is relevant in that regard.
I don't think we are angry, and you will see that most angry replies from atheists are aimed at insulting or otherwise stupidly arrogant questions.
There is nothing wrong with being a christian and we are not angry with them as a general rule.

We are not here to put people down and we are as secure as everyone else with our lack of belief.

Miserable human being? No, sorry, I'm far from miserable.

The reason I come here is to discuss religion and spirituality. Do you have to be a dog to post in the dog section?

Personally, I couldn't care less what you believe. Just keep it out of the schools and the laws of this free country and we'll get along just fine. Standing up for my freedom does not make me miserable.

The answer to your question is simple and you've pretty much already answered it.

The thing is that very, very few are the "good christians" you describe. Many more are violent, condescending, overbearing, obnoxious and just genuinely bad people who spread lies and distortions (about everything from evolution to atheists) to try and feel better about their faith.

There is nothing wrong with prayer and the 10 commandments (at least not much wrong) if it's kept to oneself... however, christians keep trying to shove the 10 commandments in courthouses where they don't belong, they keep trying to legislate their beliefs, they keep trying to deny scientific fact with distortions, fallacies and absurdities. The world is demonstrably not 4,000 years old, it takes an incredible degree of ignorance to believe this, but most people are scientifically illiterate, so it's easy to lie to them and make them believe something utterly devoid of reason or reality.

Keep your religion to yourselves, get god out of the pledge of allegiance and the coins (it was only added there during the communist scare in the 50s), you can pray in schools but dont ask the schools to endorse it, you can believe in the 10 commandments but keep that crap in your homes and not in our courts. If you don't believe in abortion or stem cell research, fine, don't use it (like how Jehova's Witnesses don't get blood transfusions), but don't try to enforce limitations on promising medical technology (the ability to cure potentially anything with stem cells!) because of what old tribesmen in huts wrote.

I've never known a miserable atheists, they tend to be very cheerful and optimistic. However, I've met very few who can tolerate other people forcing their beliefs on others.

The reason I post here is to correct misconceptions when I see them. :p

You’re right. Atheists should not be mean to Christians. However, saying that you think Christians are incorrect is not mean. It is simply disagreement. You also have to remember that no matter how we treat each other, the bottom line is that you (or at least most Christians) think I am going to hell. It’s hard not to be a little bit offended when you know that someone thinks you are hellbound; especially when you feel like you are a good person.
