I asked my dad this about 10 years ago as he worked for an aviation company. It would be almost impossible as the explosives used to jettison 250+ seats as well as to separate the fuselage would most probably make the plane explode, taking hundreds of gallons of aviation fuel with it.

This idea would simply never be viable on commercial aircraft due to the extreme weight of such systems. Very few passengers and luggage could fly on such an aircraft, making the entire thing more expensive than you could even imagine, think thousands not hundreds of dollars. Not to mention that we don't fly in specialized suits to withstand the extreme temperatures and lack of oxygen at such altitudes.

I think I will stick with the current system, thanks.

Yeah, I'd pay extra for the ejection seat. The system better have a homing signal and be adequate for ejecting at sea...

I doubt the average person could survive being ejected from a plane at 30,000 feet travelling at over 250 miles per hour ... especially if its in a dive (the tail would probably cut you in half before you could clear it).

Given that air travel is safer than driving, I'll stick with planes as is. Now, how about cutting their fuel emissions....
