My fiancee was involved in a terrible motorcycle accident this week. He has had several surgeries and will need many more. He is in surgical intensive care, where he will remain for a very long time. I am not legally family and they can not share his medical info with me. What can I do to change this? Can his daughter authorize them to share info with me and how does she do this if she decides too?

You would probably need a family adult to authorize you. Just ask to be added to the patients record as a family member.

Probably not, after the fact, although a patient can sign the HIPPA forms naming people who are authorized. Now imagine if you were living as life partners without marriage, you would face the same thing. It depends on his legal status, power of attorney, and whether she is sole heir. You may have to just ask her for the updates.

You could go a friendly method and attempt to contact the sister. If possible going to the hospital together to sign forms would help.

If they don't realease the info, go in yourself. Tell the person at the counter, you need to see their boss. When they arrive, if they don't help , ask for their boss. If no one helps you there, get a number to call to arrange a review of the situation. Continue until you get what you want. No one will want to give in, until it makes their job hard .. then they won't care.

You cannot do anything to change this. That's the way the medical privacy laws work. His daughter might could effect some change; she'll need to talk to the doctor in charge of his case and explain the situation. Then again, if she is a minor it is unlikely they will pay any attention to her. That'll mean his parents or siblings.

First off you are his family member and they can give you info. You need to be stern and the boss. The only thing they cant give you is his medical folder or history. If you know something about his history. Sorry to hear about that.
