My husband and I were involved in a car accident in June. It was not our fault (other person accepted full liability). Our car was totaled and has already been taken care of by the other insurance company. We were minorly injured and received medical treatment. The settlement offer just came in from their insurance company (Shelter). They will pay medical bills, time off work and threw in $400 for each my husband and myself. Is the $400 "extra" dollars normal? Should it be more or less? We have never had to deal with insurance companies before so have no clue what to expect for anything. Thanks for any insights.

Before accepting the money, make sure you are unlikely to have future problems. When you cash the check(s) you are also signing a release of liability for the insurance company. You can no longer add any claims. Years ago I got a check for an accident that I thought caused no injuries to me. I had merely hit my knee on the glovebox door (passenger). I can now forecast rain. This isn't serious, but could have been much worse.

The $400 is normal for minor injuries -- this is more or less an aggrevation settlement of sorts and it sounds OK from what you have described. Remember, just because you had an accident doesn't mean you hit the lottery (like those late night lawers advertise).

the $400 would be for pain and suffering. it depends on if you have any scars resulting from the accident or any surgeries that took/take place. if you feel it should be more, then make sure you continue to go to the doctor, save all receipts, even gas receipts, and any documentation from your doctor about long term effects.

Usually they will start low, and hope you accept it, you don't have to unless your comfortable with the $400. Is a negotiating start point

For minor injuries, consider it payment for your inconvenience. Only you can determine if the amount is sufficient.
