I am going on holiday onboard the thomson destiny in a few days time and I have all the tickets and information. Among the information though it reads: "A dress code applies during the evening. Excvept for on a formal night, the dress code is smart casual which means full length trousers and an open necked shirt/polo shirt for men and equivalent attire (e.g casual seperates or dresses for ladies)" My query is, what is meant by smart casual? can it be denim full length trousers or is it more formal than that meaning black cotton trousers or something similar?

Any response is fab.
Thanks :)

Formal means for men a tuxedo and for women it means a long gown, or a party dress, like sequenced and/or lacy.

Smart casual is the type attire that you would expect to see if you went to a business office like a bank. For men trousers, not necessarily black or blue, a shirt with a collar, preferable not a pullover, and regular shoes, not sneakers or sandals. For women a dress or skirt and blouse and shoes other than flip-flops and sandals, but not necessarily heels.

Denim pants can be dressy if they have for example, pleats and/or cuffs, and are not of the fades and ragged type. A pair of denim with a dress shirt, or other shirt with a collar and regular shoes, and maybe a blazer or jacket (no tie) would be acceptable. But not faded jeans with a pull over top and sandals.

You did not say which ship or cruise line. If you go on most usual cruise lines like Carnival, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean and Princess you will not find the dress code as strictly enforced as on the high end cruise lines where everyone "dresses" for dinner every night.

Wear a nice suit with a shirt of your choice color. If you want, you could add a pocket square to your attire and brighten it up the fashionable way. Check out www.oxemberg.com ad their facebook page for more of these dressing tips.

Denim is really not appropriate. Black or white cotton slacks would be better.
Sundresses are fine for the ladies, and a collared shirt with slacks for the men.

most places smart casual is like khaki pants - dress pants - no denim. demin is considered casual casual. So you are looking for dress pants (khakis) and polo style shirt. Formal is complete suit and tie.

hope this helps.

Jeans are never a good idea on formal night.

Slacks, long sleave shirt, tie, and jacket.
