I don't know why you would do that to anyone. It feels threatening when someone does that. It is very possible that the police officer would stop you and ask you questions.

No, however it does give the officer a reason to pay much closer attention to you.
A police officer can stop and talk to anyone they want. That is not a detention, but a "consensual conversation". At that point you could walk away if you wanted.

If through talking to you or from some other means the officer has "reasonable suspicion" that you have or about to commit a crime, then you can be legally detained until the officer investigates further. At this point you can not leave.

If the officer finds "probable cause" that you have or will commit a crime, then you can be arrested. Otherwise the officer needs to release you.

A police officer can stop you and question you if he has probable cause. If you look suspicious, and a crime has been committed near where you are when you decide to try & stare down a cop, and you match the description of the person the cops are looking for, they may legally detain you.

They can also handcuff you and search you, for their own safety, to see if you are carrying any weapons.

Get real. . . . to stare down a cop isn't the brightest thing to do. It makes you appear guilty. Anyone who has nothing to hide and doesn't commit crimes, should have no fear of the police.

People need to quit whining about their freedoms being taken away by the government. I am glad that our law enforcement people are vigilant. It keeps the riff raff off the streets.

A police officer can talk to anyone he wants, he doesn't need any reason. He can only detain you once he has a reasonable suspicion of criminal activity. Then he can detain for as much time as is necessary to determine if a crime in fact occurred.

Where I live, yes it is. walking too close to him, walking rapidly away and going into a store or whatever may also result in your being followed and/or stopped.

Same goes for putting your hand in a jacket pocket or stuffing a package into a trash can and hurriedly walking away.

The least thing you do may result in trouble today, freedom from unreasonable search and seizure is no longer a right.

There used to be rules in this country such as probable cause for the police to stop you and question or to search you (remember those days? seem so long ago now).

But during the past 6 years Bush and his fascist GOP party have rolled back many such rights and freedoms americans have had since the inception of our republic.

It's called "probable cause." If you are staring an officer down like you are trying to watch them to see if they are watching YOU, then that could give them "probable cause" to either search your person and/or give you a sobriety test. They really can't do too much beyond that, barring that you have blood or something like that on you!
