Tire Changing kit
Small First Aid Kit which had emergency blankets and everything.
Gallon of water
Jumper cables
Mini Maglight flashlight
Matches
Change of warm clothes (sweater, socks, etc)
Bikini (in case the urge to go to the beach arises)
Towel
I've got a bunch of other crap in there, even though my car looks clean as a whistle.... but I don't think it's anything that would help in case of emergency (even a beach emergency, lol).

1. Jump-start kit. This is a rechargeable devise that allows me to jump-start my car WITHOUT another car. It also has an air compressor to inflate tires.
2. Heavy duty jumper cables. 20 ft 4 ga. If the jump-start kit fails, I'm covered.
3. 3-D Cell flashlight and spare batteries.
4. 1 quart oil
5. 1 Gallon mixed coolant.
6. 2 blankets.
7. can 'Fix-a-flat'
8. 1 Gallon gas can (empty).
9. Engine trouble code reader.
10. Tool kit.
11. Cell phone charger.
12. Folding multi-purpose tool.
Note: some people mentioned store bought emergency kits. I have jet to meet anyone that has one that actually knows what is in it. NOTHING in the kit is worth the weight if you don't know it is there.

Most everything that has been mentioned but I do carry one very important device and that is a car/van battery that is sealed in its own case and you can keep it in your trunk. It has its own jumper cables so you can connect it to your battery and it will start your car without needing someone Else's battery. It's much better than carrying a set of jumper cables and hoping someone comes along that will help you. You can buy this at any auto store. You only need to charge it every 3 months. Just plug it into your ac outlet at home. It's a life saver if your on the road and your battery dies. Don't forget a small air compressor ($10) will help in case you need air. The battery jumper also has plug In's for that too.

I carry jumper cables, a spare, a jack & tire iron, a blanket, a pair of boots, a pair of tennis shoes, a first aid kit, a whistle, a flashlight, and extra batteries for the flashlight. I also make sure I always have my cell phone with me and a car charger. I always try to stay prepared.

I have an old coat in case its cold. Gloves is important, in case its cold or you need to work on something. Changing a tire in the winter without gloves is nearly impossible.
A flashlight is also good. Batteries degrade over time, so I have one of those shake flashlights, it works good but the light is a little dim, so I have a regular flashlight and the shake flashlight is a backup.
Flares, and an obvious one - cell phone to call for help.

I brought an emergency kit from a car store that comes with jumping cables, flares, air in a can for a flat tire, a flashlight and some other things you should look into buying one. I am a female so I am afraid of breaking down so its good to have a kit.

Wow! I thought I was over cautious. I keep most everything that was mentioned aside from the ice scraper thing cause I live in the extreme south but I do keep a waterproof plastic container with crackers and fruit snacks and items with a long shelf life. I also keep a few gallons of water. I have a fear of running off the road and not being found for days and since my 5 year old is with me all the time I try to think of things that would keep her occupied like books and puzzles. Also I travel with a blanket with me but only because I am cold by nature. I keep a pocketknife in my glove box and one in my purse. And scissors in my first aid kit. One thing to remember is always have these things where if it is an accident they are well secured whether in your trunk or not. In many accidents your trunk pops open and you could lose all of your preperations if you dont secure them in. A knife can't cut your seatbelt if its where you cant get to it like in your first aid kit in the trunk.
