My shih tzu is afraid and I want to know if it is the breed or my dog?

All dogs can swim. Some just don't like getting wet - especially small dogs, but it just could be your dog's personality - it knows how to swim but doesn't WANT to. Shih-tzu's are just not water dogs, that's all. But don't force your dog to swim...it could get scared. Here's a video of a Shih-tzu swimming, lol: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7U94_G7FfQ

Mostly what SW33T said. All dogs have an instinct to swim- thats where the 'doggy paddle' came from. My dog is scared of water, and hates baths, but one say he fell in the lake in our backyard after chasing a squirrel and swam back to shore looking terrified. :] Lol

Yes, your dog can swim, but don't force it to if it doesn't like it- it can traumatize your dog.

Many long hair breeds do not like to get fully wet as it can take a long time for their coats to dry.
