I hate to say this..but do you really want to use the VA? I'm also a Vet, but with all the problems they're having.. I'll take my chances with a witch doctor.

It's actually a great question though.. I am currently without medical or dental insurance and considered calling them to see what services were available to me.

You got some good advise and some not so good. Correct you should contact the closest VA Hospital in your area. Have a copy of your DD214 with you when you go and they will be able to answer your questions about health care. You are not eligible for dental unless you have an injury that can be related to the military or you are 100%% disabled. The GI Bill does have a time limit for education, 10 years I think. The rules are different for each era of veteran so it is hard to give specifics. Also the bad comments about the health care are very general. I know from personal experience the care varies in different areas of the country just like any other health care system. It happens that the South Texas Health Care System is great but you will have to judge yours personally. Good luck!

Medical benefits for veterans are only covered 100% for service related issues. All others you would need to use an insurance carrier as if going to any other hospital. You are entitled to limited GI Bill benefits as long as you paid into the system when you joined the military.

In a word, yes. Make sure you have a copy of your DD Form 214/ANG Form 22 with you and check in with your local VA office - they'll provide you with literature on the services available to you, which DO include some health care benefits. The GI Bill may expire on you depending on your period of service, so check on that ASAP.

I won't even pretend I know the answer to this but I can tell you that you'll need to contact your local VA rep. You will need to have documentation of your service. Your rep can tell you what other documents you might need give you some contacts for getting copies of them.

No, unless you did active duty service, and even then it's limited. VA is for active duty military, not for reserves.

I believe you have to be at least 50% disabled, as my Dad is. He gets everything free of charge, including his prescriptions.

ask VA, silly.

my 84 year old father is honorably discharged from infantry combat in Europe [1944-1945].

He isn't eligible for VA medical because he isn't poor enough.

From what I hear, you don't want VA medical anyway.

Oh.
