A man went from being a hardened killing machine (military) and fundamentalist Christian to a kind and empathetic atheist. Generally, when one hears of personal transformation, it is TO a religion, rather than from it. In this case, study and experience brought new understanding and compassion.... it also brought acceptance of life for life's sake rather than religious teachings. How is such transformation possible without the religious connection so many profess to be necessary? This is NOT a hypothetical, it is in referrence to a real person. Your thoughts?

It has been my experience that, these days at least, when anyone has a spiritual "change", it is typically either from a total lack of religion, to a form of Deism, or from a religion of some kind, to Deism, Agnosticism, or Atheism.

Basically, it typically involves someone having an epiphany and realizing that they'd like to be nicer to people.
