How can I install vmware without a host OS?

I heard it's called VMware ESX.
Is that easy to install?
Is it free?

Well there is a VMware ESX sever
http://www.vmware.com/products/vi/esx/
Should be easy to install.
Not free (in fact can be rather expensive.
