Because no one is ever going to get along with everyone. It's just the way it is, really sad, but true.
Christians should never "pick on" unbelievers. When a believer is truly saved and a mature Christian they will realize that unbelievers can't understand because God has not revealed Himself to them. They simply don't know any better. Why should I go around calling unbelievers names and belittling them? I'm not showing them the love of Christ at all if I do that. There is a way to get across your beliefs without attacking the unbeliever. None of us are perfect, so you are never going to have a perfect place.
We won't be able to live in peace until the antichrist rises to power...and even then it will be a false peace.
Oh, and in reference to Big Red Machine's answer...Christians have also been tortured and killed for their beliefs.

Because we can't seem to abide by rule number 1 in philosophy. We can't agree to disagree.
There is no definitive answer to this question, and people become furious, flustered, and offended when a definitive answer cannot be reached about who we are, what we belive or don't believe.
Pretty soon, it just becomes an all out free-for-all. It's been going on since the dawn of mankind, and will probably go on until we cease to exist.

Hahahaha....What if, eh?
Yeah, what if the Muslims and Christians and Buddhists and everyone could just stop fighting, right? Of course that would kind of kill everyone's economy, being fueled by war and the like, and then that would make everyone depressed and unhappy, which I guess, would lead to more fighting eventually anyways.
Huzzah for humanity, lol~

People put down others with different beliefs because they are insecure of their own. Someone who is comfortable in their own beliefs wouldn't feel the need to be so defensive or mean to others.
Some of the things I have read here from people of ALL types of beliefs is very disheartening. They are demonstrating what is the worst of their belief, not the best.

Both sides tend to see the other viewpoint as ridiculous in the first place, so when they argue, they really don't listen to each other, and what the other thinks.
It's like talking to a wall that answers you back, but in a different language.

I haven't seen nearly as much Christian bashing from atheists, as I've seen atheist bashing from Christians, as far as questions that are posted. In response to some questions, atheists may feel the need to defend or retaliate.
Anyway, Christianity has thrived on war and conflict since it's inception. That was a pretty long time ago. So why would they stop now?

Some people need to validate their own beliefs/ arguments by attacking others. It happens all the time. and not just in religious debates. I am a religious person, but I don't go around accusing or attacking others, I'm my own person, and am secure in that.

Because when people think others are evil because they don't believe in god... there is going to be fighting. And when people think others are imbeciles because they believe in god... there is going to be fighting.
If everyone were agnostic (doesn't know one way or the other whether there is a god because it can't be proved one way or the other) then maybe we could all get along in peace.
Reason, Humility = Peace
Irrationality, Stubbornness, Ego = War

I would never tear anybody down. I certainly do disagree with many here though. But consider this. If all of us atheists converted to a religion, there would still be much fighting, even killing over religion. Muslims against jews, protestants against catholics, etc. But imagine if everybody became atheist. Nothing to fight over anymore huh?
