absolutely. And they'll take you to court and garnish your wages, PLUS court costs, attorney fees, and interest, if you don't pay.

Collection accounts can only be listed on your credit report for a period of 7-10 years on average. And, as one member mentioned collection agencies can attempt to collect a debt for as long as they choose and the account can be transferred from Collection Agency to Collection Agency. However, what has not been mentioned is the fact that a debt can only be legally collected for a certain period of time. This period of time differes from State to state and is defined in the State Statutes. Statutes of limitations limit the amount of time that a collection agency can file legal action against you for theunpaid debt.Statutes of Limitations differ for different kinds of debt. As an example in your state the statute of limitations for medical debt may be 4 years. If the collection agency tries to take legal action against you after the statute of limitations has expired you have a legal defense in the court of law.

Steve-
Here is where people get confused. Legally, they can only report this account to the credit reporting agencies for a certain number of years (generally 7-10, depending on your state). However, they can collect on this debt FOREVER. Hope this clears things up!

If you truly owe the money, they can try to collect on it forever. Even though your credit report "renews" every 7-10 years, the account can just get sold to another collection agency until you pay it.

Certainly they can collect it, assuming it's a valid debt and you owe the money.
