Hi,
I have Pet Care Gold insurance for my Poodles. There are different rates for the insurance. I got the one that pays 70% of your bills, not including regular check ups.
I have a page on my website all about Pet insurance. Check it out, it might help.

I recommend Petplan or Kennel Club insurance - the more expensive ones, but as with everything, you get what you pay for.
No insurance will cover preventative treatment - that is, neutering, vaccination, flea and worm treatment or dental clean ups (they will obviously cover dental extractions).
Whatever you choose, look out for the hidden clauses in most pet insurances (excluding Petplan and Kennel Club) - most will only pay out a certain amount per year, or only pay out for each condition once. Which isn't a lot of help if you dog develops a lifelong condition like diabetes or joint problems! These kinds of insurance are fine for one-off emergencies but for full comprehensive cover go with one of the two I've recommended.
Any insurance policy will include an excess - the amount of the bill you have to pay yourself. For instance if your excess is $60 and your bill in only $70 there's no point claiming because you'll only get $10 back.

I researched pet insurance when I got my dog. This is what I learned:
1. You have to have the policy 1 year before you can file a claim.
2. If your dog breed has a certain tendancy towards a certain problem (hip dysplasia, etc) it wont cover it.
3. If your dog has a pre existing problem, it wont cover it.
I declined pet insurance. It wouldnt have done me any good. My rottie had hip problems at 5 months, so even if I had pet ins, it wouldnt cover her because I didnt have the policy 1 year, its a condition quite common in her breed, and if I waited a year for the policy to be in force, it was a pre existing condition.
Good luck

I too purchased insurance for my Shih-Tzu. From what Ive read the costs outweigh the guilt one may have if one day its between the money vs. your beloved pet. I purchased VPI insurance. My vet as well as many of my friends and colleagues recommend this one. This policy covers a portion of well visits as well and I took the additional coverage for cancer. Some plans don't cover well visits proclaiming theses visits are scheduled so it can be sanctioned for but their costs are very similar to the costs for well visit coverage. I pay about $33 a month for the full gambit.

I think you have to research within your city. I have Banfield. And it has been great. It is not all that necessary when they are older, but are great for vaccination and regular check ups, i read earlier that someone had written you have to have the insurance for one year before you can make any claim and that is just not true. At least not with my insurance. And I like my insurance cause if you have a dog on the insurance, you get a discounted rate for their puppies, which is great since I just became a grandma to 9 puppies!

I would call your local vet. Since he/she is the one that will be taking care of your pup, they usually have their own individual preference and will give you that information right in their office. That way you will be sure they will use what insurance you are purchasing. :-) Great question and your a terrific RESPONSIBLE & LOVING PET OWNER.
