When people are at their lowest they are at their most vulnerable state and therefore more easily fooled and taken advantage of.

Hmmm. That's not my story. Although I don't generally use the term "born-again" when describing myself/my faith. I was raised Catholic, but I generally left Catholicism behind when I was 13 - call it born again, saved, whatever you will - it's when I found Jesus. I wasn't on drugs or alcohol.
I will say this however, in later years (college/adult) I did go through phases (some lasted a few years even) where I experimented, drank too much on a regular basis, and made poor decisions for myself/my life that caused me a sense of great depression. By making better decisions for myself, and not "clubbing" etc. - my life improved. When it improved, I didn't want to keep myself in the arenas that would naturally lead to those same or worse choices. I started attending church again regularly and made friends there who are also just trying to live a good, full and happy life.
I also believe that my experimenting and alcohol abuse (I was never a true addict) would have become a lot worse if I didn't feel the pull of God in my life during those times.
For Me - he is the real deal. But I don't stand around pointing that out to everyone I meet. I do discuss my faith on R&S because that's what this section is here for. And in real life, if someone asks me about my faith, I will speak about it. And in real life if someone attacks me for my faith, I will speak about it then too.

Please don't generalize. I'm sure many Christians do come out of a life of drugs, alcohol and sexual immorality.
I however am not one of them.
I was raised in a Christian home. I never touched drugs, not any of them. I never even smoked a cigarette. I think I have drank once in my life. That however, I do not believe to be sin unless you are drinking merely for the purpose of being drunk. Sorry for the whole sidenote thing! =)
I was a virgin until I was married. I don't say all these things to say "Hey look at me and how great I am, I'm such an angel!"
Quite the contrary, I was still lost and in need of a Savior, just like everybody else. I still sinned, probably every day, in some form or fashion. And even though I am a believer, and growing in Christ, I still sin. The difference is, that I mourn over my sin and turn away from it.
So just to let you know, not all born again Christians are going to come out of the same sins, but they will have the same story. It goes something like this....I was dead in my trespasses and Christ in His infinite mercy made me alive.
As for why they have to say He is the real deal? Well I don't think I've ever used those exact words, but ponder of this...when someone's life has been completely changed, how can they stop from telling people? How can we as Christians stop from telling of His praise? How can we ever say enough of His amazing love?
Think on this, if you won a bunch of money or someone saved your life or donated one of their kidneys wouldn't you be telling everyone you knew? It's the same for Christians.

Brother in Jesus, your spiritually puerile assumption is wrong.
Jesus comes down, elevates and Spirit Transforms ALL sincere humans on earth who are seeking more truth. Some few may have their brain fried by drugs and alcohol abuse, but most are average, sober, Truth-seeking humans. A few are of spiritual and intellectual genius such as Blaise Pascal and may have a profound Vision of God and Jesus as One infinite Spirit Light of Life Eternal (while Pascal was perusing and deeply reflecting on the last portions of John ch 17.)
If you check here all of my prior Questions and Answers, you will see that my story is very Unique; checking others' Q & A when sober should also reveal this absolute Uniqueness of each a every human personality. Each human personsality (and all personalities) are Absolutely Unique in both time and in Eternity --You, Dear Reader, are a mortal son of God Personality without duplicate -- everywhere and ever !
Peace and progress,
Brother Dave, a Jesusonian Christian

Well praise the LORD that you did find him! Yet it is true many people turn to the LORD in times of crisis, because they realize the inability that they can not save themselves though most of these fox hole conversions do not last some do and follow Christ wholeheartedly. Why do we say that Jesus is the real deal - well honestly because He Is! He is the only real deal, he is the only who has the power to save and the desire to save and the willingness and has gone that extra thousand miles to save yours and my pitiful wretched self. When we were lost in sin. Yes the sun is there and the moon, is there but Jesus is greater, more powerful and influence He is the Creator, the LORD of Heaven and Earth

Wow thats funny I was never into any of those things and I have a relationship with the Lord now. I suppose sometimes it takes people to hit rock bottom before they realize they need help. You cant get much more down in the dumps than that. You reach out for help and unfortunately there are only a few around to help and God is always there willing to take you from desperation to the top of the world. He takes all there you just need to really believe in Him. Not say it but show it. Peace out.....

Ok, do you prefer: I was raised in a Christian home, never took drugs, never got drunk and am an upbeat person? It's the truth in my case. No, it's not necessary to be down in the dumps, but like Jesus himself said, people who have been forgiven a LOT (and/or needed the most help) are the most grateful. Why do these people insist that Jesus is the "real deal"? Because they tried everything else first and it didn't fill the void. Those aren't just words to those people; they've lived it.

The only similar part of this to all born again Christians, is the fact that Christ Jesus gave us as Christians salvation.
No, I have a different testimony then what you are talking about, and I have met several Christians that have been Christian all their lives.
Honestly, as much as there is different people in this world, each Christian has a different testimony. So to generalize that "all" Christians have been into drugs before having their faith in the Lord God is so misleading.

Those are just the testimonies you chose to remember. Others are not so colorful and would not make good movies. I was raised in a God filled house with Spirit filled people. I have remained close to the Lord all my life and have been spared from major conflict. I have truly been blessed in that all my family has been spared of the worlds delusions. Don't get me wrong we have had moments of sorrow but that is it just moments. The Lord as delivered us each time and give Him all the glory in doing so. So you see we do each come from different backgrounds and have different stories. Christ is the only constant in our lives.
Yours in Christ,
Miss Mona

Because born again Christians realized they were hopeless before they turned to Christ. There was no where to turn for help because no one they knew would or could help them. So? They turned to Christ.
The reality of turning to Christ is being saved from the bondage of our old sins. With confession of faith, Jesus Christ is Lord & Savior (Atonemnet) and believing in ones heart Jesus raised from the dead, is the spiritual birth & transformation.
This is a true creative miracle. A spiritual birth has happened. For by the spoken Word of God & the Faith of God, all things are created. So spiritual birth is created in us. This is everlasting life. Who overcomes? Those who are born of God. What is our victory, our faith.
Because people know when God saves them from the road of destruction. Each born again Christian does have the same Savior, they are of the same Spirit, they have the same Abba Father. (Some don't know who they are in Christ though.) It is obvious to me who saved me from a 1 yr breakdown. I probably would have died if God didn't miraculously touch me & heal me.

To be honest, I know quite a few born-agains who don't have this sort of background at all. However, it does seem that certain evangelists (especially televangelists) like to feature people with radical conversion stories because they're far more dramatic than the average person on the street relating a more conventional experience.
