Since more people use Firefox, I have found it is more compatible with some websites and web applications (such as Google's applications.) Safari is more consistent with the Mac OS X theme, and is said to be faster (although I have never found this to be true). Although I use Safari for the consistency I believe that Firefox is probably the best way to go for your default browser.

Firefox can support both Mac and OS. However, Safari only support Mac.
