The book of Revelation almost didn't make into the official canon.

Also, it is the only book where we get the idea of hell from the lake of fire.

The apocalypse writings are similiar but weren't included.

Do you think it was included to substantiate the idea of eternal punishment but was tame enough to not conflict with other doctrine?

Because John was the only stoner in the bunch. That's why Revelations reads so much like a bad acid trip.

JC told him to stay away from that moldy rye bread, but did he listen....?

The other apocalyptic writings were pretty scary, but didn't have the detail to quite ring true. And, a lot of the monsters in John's version were based on real people whom contemporaries would have recognized, giving the book some added power.

My opinion is that the Book of Revelation is included, because it is the end of the story, so to speak. It's the final chapter in the Bible and the final chapter of mankind's existence on earth. It describes the end of earth and the return of Christ and what will happen during that time.

Honestly, it does not seem tame to me, but pretty scary. I think it's also meant as a warning and to show Christians the signs they will see as the present world comes to its end.

Probably. The books selected for Canon, and those rejected, such of which still exist, suggest there were a lot of decisions made for the purposes of creating and maintaining political power.

You know, to many Christians are too wrapped up in the afterlife to bother to realize that they have to get through THIS life first.

Revelations is not the only apocalyptic book. Read Daniel, Ezekiel, and Isaiah as well.

John had a better publicist, and the other guys ideas disagreed with that the 3rd century church believed so they were suppressed.
