You need to get into trouble enough to get busted, but not severe enough for a court martial.
Article 15 of the UCMJ: Commanding Officer's Non-Judicial Punishment. It outlines what punishments can be handed out by your commanding officer without you standing court martial.

First of all...its not a reward. Its usually offered from an offense that is either severe or from a chain of delinquent events. You can refuse an Article 15, instead be judged by court martial. This usually doesn't happen and the offense of Article 15 stands with non-Judaical punishment (i.e. pay reduction, extra duty, and loss of rank or "suspended bust" ). Whatever the case many except the violation of Article 15 and press on, if judged in the military Judaical punishment court you can be prosecuted and spend some time in military jail or be acquitted, like nothing ever happen.

Anything that is a violation of the UCMJ. The commanding officer has the option in most cases to either give you an administrative action or seek a courts martial. In fact, when you read an Article 15, it says in part that refusal to accept this action will result in a courts martial.

Okay, go ahead and listen to these latrine lawyers. Sam just loves to burn a dummy because it serves as such a wonderful example to all the others!!
Should the command become aware of your desire to get an Article 15 you could very well be charged with 'Conspircy' which is a Court Martial offense!
If you intent is to get an Article 15 to evade a depolyment than I suggest you reconsider your plan. Your Company or Battalion Commander will be more than happy to reduce you in grade, take your pay, restrict you and then still deploy you with everybody else in the unit.
My advice to you is take yourself over to the Chaplan's office and get your mind right. I got my Article 15 back in the day when they didn't count for nothing, today an Article 15 stays in your jacket forever!!! Don't do something stupid and let it haunt you for the rest of your military

An article-15 is (oversimplified) the military version of a misdemeanor. You don't have to do anything horrible. A simple violation of the regs can earn you one. Your CoC will usually give you counseling statements before they give article-15's (just as a warning), but sometimes they have to bypass that step. It depends on the offense.

Screw up!, get insubordinate with your NCO, get stupid and get a DUI, shoplift at the BX/PX, get caught with some bluntz, get caught having sex with the General's daughter!
these are some of the things that will earn you a 'reward" of an Article 15.

Simpy disobey orders. One person I know got one for eating food in the mailroom (though she was warned not to many times). Another person got it for having sex in the barracks with a female. A third person got one for missing multiple formations.
