I agree with that phrase to an extent. I don't see an issue with giving a child a spank to the bottom or a slap to the top of the hand. Sometimes its just what a kid needs to get their attention. Anything that leaves red marks or God forbid bruises is over the top.

I read somewhere that the 'rod' in this passage is not a switch to spank the child but the 'crook a shepherd uses to guide his sheep and keep them out of trouble. I guess this is only speculative, but then most of what you read about the Bible is speculative.
I don't really believe in spanking children. I think when you beat up a kid you are showing him or her that you are the boss because you're the strongest. I think that's the wrong thing to teach a child! I always wondered if the reason some kids bully smaller kids is that their parents taught them that this is how you get what you want from people who are smaller and weaker than you.

What does hitting your child accomplish? It teaches your child that a bigger person can hit a smaller person. A child who is punished through hitting often acts "good" to avoid punishment as opposed to acting good for its own sake. Almost every advanced country in the world has either banned corporal punishment of children outright, or has passed laws severely curtailing same. There's a good reason for this. Those who would answer this and similar questions indicating that spanked children do better in life, simply don't know what they're talking about. What studies do show is that there's a far higher incidence of the use of corporal punishment on those who have been in prison than in the general population.
A child can be disciplined in far better ways than by hitting them. I'm always shocked when I see from the responses from these types of questions how many parents still condone the use of spanking.

My son has never been spanked. I think that rule is archaic. There are certian types of children that may benefit from properly applied spankings. But I know too many people that use that phrase as justification to hit their child whenever they please. Well' you've all heard the stories.
My son is basically a compliant child and it would crush him to discipline him physically. I do not want to teach him to solve problems with physical violence. He responds well to other forms of discipline and I don't find it necessary to spank. He's 6, and an only child.

I agree with the saying. As a parent of 4 very well behaved children. I knew when the punishment fit the crime so to speak. There is nothing wrong with spanking as long as you do not abuse.

Sometimes, spanking is the last resort. I have a 7 year old son and I spanked him a few times, but didn't really need to more than that. He'd get warnings that they were coming and then change his attitude.

Each child is differant, spanking works for some and not for others. It really depends on the kid. Only you will know what will work best for your child. You want to be ferm but not crule. Kids are smart too hun. And not every parent works the same. Spanking might work for your hubby but not you.... hard to answer really hun, i wish you luck

my parents hit me when i was young.. my mom even beat me with a hanger.. it was painful & i got bruises so many times, it was embarrassing when friends asked what was that i just said i fell or something.. & that stopped when i was about.. 16 or something.. so.. i will never hit my child.. maybe spank yes or slap in the hand.. IF he misbehaves.. but not beating, slapping in the face or with a belt.. that's just cruel.. I KNOW..

I got beat up a lot as a kid by my parents, it did'nt do any good, ever get beat up in the bathroom ? everything is hard. There is "NO HITTING" permitted in this house ! They say that an abused child becomes an abuser, that's "B.S." !
