I will take my puppy out many times a day...sometimes she will pee outside. But most of the time I will take her out and she thinks its play time. We will go back in and she will use the bathroom as soon as we are back in the house. Now she has it in her head that going out is play time...which is fine sometimes, because it is, but she needs to use the bathroom outside also...any suggestions?

You may need to spend more time outside...walk the dog (on a leash) around until she goes, then praise effusively and maybe offer a treat. If after 20 minutes, she doesn't potty outside, bring her in, and put her back in her crate, wait 30 min to an hour, and take her back out again. It shouldn't take long for her to understand where you want her to go. Don't let it be "play time" until AFTER she goes potty. She needs to learn that play is a REWARD for going outside.

A loud noise scares dogs - typically, have some newspaper handy and make a noise near her. Even having a pair of flip flops to bang together to teach her. She will get a fright, you will take her outside, she will slowly get the message.

Also, note the times a puppy needs the loo. Just after waking up is ALWAYS a given. As she wakes up, watch her. When she starts sniffing about, go outside, calling her. Its no use picking her up - how does she learn? You call her from outside, so that she will follow you. Leave her until she is done, then walk back inside, again, let her follow you.

By creating a negative association (Pavlov's Dogs...) so urinating in the house, as well as by teaching her where to go, you will ween her off peeing in the house. How old is she? Obviously if she is over about 12 - 14 weeks, I would move onto a gentle tap on the bum with a rolled up newspaper.

If she is peeing already, dont' let her finish. Pick her up, and rush her outside!! She will learn if you are consistent and patient. Remember that every dog is a reflection of you - so if she doens't listen, its because you haven't done it properly. Mostly, if you teach her young enough, you shouldn't even have to do the gentle tap on the bum. We trained ours by calling her outside every time she needed it!

Our puppy did this also. What I find is good is to take her to the same spot everytime & make sure she's leashed. As soon as she poos/pees tell her 'Good [Name]' and take her inside immediately (of course cleaning it up if you're in an apt community or the like). Then if you do the treat thing, immediately give her a treat. I find it also good to make her sit while I take off the leash outside (to get her knowing exactly what she should do each time). Pretty much I've discovered that when you first have a puppy, you need to take them out a LOT & it is VERY important to keep doing things exactly the same each time (leash them, take them to the same spot, etc). That seems to help them to learn better/quicker. Also - when you are outside with them and they want to play, make sure it's away from where they poo/pee. =)

If you're not in the room with them, you need to have them crated - which honestly eliminates a lot of the poo/pee in the house. Our puppy loves her crate & has never poo/peed in it!!

It's a good idea to take a puppy out to pee/poo first thing in the morning, right after they eat/drink, and after they get done sleeping or playing. Normally when they are playing if they stop & look around and sniff - get em out immediately. =)

I was told by a trainer to be the most boring person outside as you can be. She has to learn that outside is oppurtunity to go. If she doesn't go outside, when you bring her back in, put her in a crate that is only big enough for her to lay down, stand up, turn around, and lay back down. good luck!!!

Leave your pup in a small confined space for a few hours then come home and take him/her out when it's done u make a fuss over it. An animal will not mess up where they stay and when u take them out and make a fuss over what they did a light comes on. But it has to be a confined space

google "crate training" it works. Reward your dog when it goes outside and watch him at all times inside. If you catch him trying to go you say "NO" and take it outside to finish.

Crate training.

Obedience school is great for other training, but not for house training.
