Beans have some forms of complex sugar in them that don't get digested in the stomach. Instead they are eaten by bacteria in the intestines. These bacterial produce gas, just like yeast in bread. The gas builds up and . . . well, it has to go somewhere. Did you know that in 1 cm of your intestine there are more bacteria than the number of people in the world?

But if you eat beans often, your body learns how to digest them better! Beans are very good for you, very nutritious and low-fat, and low on the glycemic index (i.e. not fattening). I eat them two or three times a week (just a little as a side dish) and I don't have trouble with them making me fart.
