...or is he just riding his legendary father's coattails at this point? Seems as though he hasn't really fought anyone and gets way too much press based on his own accomplishments. Is it all pomp and no circumstance, or does the kid have the tools to be a great one?

Not until he fights top competition will I say J.C.Chavez Jr is for real. Alfonso Gomez called him out after beating Arturo Gatti so that would be a start I suppose. Gomez ain't no championship material but he can box and could give Chavez problems.

he's actually been pretty impressive lately, of course most of it is just hype and yes he is riding his dad's coattail for the time being but you can tell he really is trying to make a name for himself, most people are complaining that he should be fighting top 20 type of fighters but the reality is, is that he is nowhere near that competition just yet, he has no amateur back ground but yet most people want to throw him in there with better quality fighters. The reality is he's only 19, 20 years old? he's still just a kid who's expected to do decent stuff but nobody knows for sure how far he's gonna go.

He's real, very real. But, he's only as good as his competition - which has been lackluster to this point. He's still two or three years and 10 fights (against quality opponents) away from truly challenging. If his handlers threw him into the Top 10 right now, he'd get his a s s handed to him.

He will never be the fighter his father was. You have to be skeptical of a fighter that won't take a step up in his competion. So far he has fought all bums that had no chance of challenging him. His father fought everyone and anyone during his time. Is he ever even going to step up and fight someone we've heard of?

Looks like a coattail rider to me, but he still has time, he is young and will eventually have to upgrade his level of competition. Time will tell, a lot has to do with who he fights and how well he does with the rest of his career. I would like to see Julio's son fight Tommy Hearn's son, that would be and interesting match up between two hall of famer's offspring.

Jury is still out, lets see him fight the next level of competition, and then we will decide.
