that's fine, My dogs run free except my chihuahuas , They stay outdoors and I walk them with no leash. My Chihuahuas have a little doggy door that leads to a small fenced area that we clean daily.

I have 2 dogs who are both about 3 years old. I fill their food bowls just once in the morning, and that seems to work for them as they eat off and on throughout the day. I take them out 4-5 times daily:
1. Immediately when we all get up in the morning about 9 AM.
2. Then again about 10 AM (after they get a shot at their fresh food bowls (also because sometimes they each only do half of their "business" during the first walk).
3. They're good until about 4 PM for the 3rd outing.
4. Sometime soon after we finish our dinner (which the smell of our meal usually stimulates them to finish any of their remaining food), they go out around 7:30ish.
5. Then the final "good night" walk is about 10 PM.
I should mention that they are both small dogs (6 lbs. & 12 lbs.) which I believe having smaller bladders, etc. might be the reason for the 5th trip. In any case, we don't mind because they are both great little girls; and we appreciate that they are very meticulous and are very respectful about not soiling anywhere in our house !

I don't think it's too much! I walk my dog once in the morning (45min to an hour) then again in the afternoon, when the sun is down or gone, same distance and time... we've got a route that depending on our direction is 2.5 to 3.8 miles long. I walk fast, and he's a Jack Russell Terrier, so he's not real tall; that gets him a workout... he also gets about 30 to 60min. of free leash time, running in a field across the street from were we live; this gives him free running time, that I couldn't possibly give him, no matter how fast my "speedwalking" is. As far as holding for pee; he's been inside for up to ten hours, without incident... but I've had dogs in the past who've held if for 15hrs, and I felt soooo bad for having left her that long!
Well, I hope this helps!

Your dog should have a chance to go potty the moment he gets up/out of his crate (assuming you use one) in the morning. After that, it depends on if he is potty trained or not. If he is not trained, then going every 2-3 hours is not too much. If he is trained, then every 4-5 hours is OK. Don't forget he needs to walk for exercise too!
Puppies can usually "hold it" for their age in months +1 - as an example, a 5 month old pup can hold it for six hours. After 7 months, tho, they should be able to hold it a full 8 hour day.
It sounds like you are letting his go potty plenty, unless he is a young pup. You might want to consider changing that 2PM if he eats lunch. Again, it depends on his age.
Think of it this way - even if you CAN hold it for a long time, would you really want to?

Those of you who are giving out info on how long a dog can hold it is done by their age. There was just a story on the news about this very thing. I believe it is the age and add 1 hr to it so a six yr old should be safe and hold it for 7 hrs. Also this goes by the size and weight also. please remember that you need to watch your dog for signs like circleing, pacing, smaller dogs will sneak behind furniture, if you catch them in the act pick them up and put them out, do not yell or this scares the dog and he will be afraid to let you see him go potty cause he will think it is bad. When he does it outside, always carry treats and when he finishes or goes in the right spot reward him.

Your not walking your dog too much, at least you spending the quality time with him. Its good you are also getting that excercise in for him.
I take my little one out in the morning 6:30am and then again 7:30am before I leave for work and again in the evening. But since my dog is a yorkie and doesnt require much excercise as they are so active all on their own, I normally leave the door open and she knows where to go in the yard. Weekends I take her for her regular walks, but not long ones as she is tiny.

I would say for a dog over a year can hold it for a couple hours, just depends on the dog, and how much they drink/eat. You can't walk your dog too much, it's so good for them. I would say your schedule is perfect! :)
