You need a photo ID and a birth certificate if traveling by land or boat. You need a passport if traveling by air. Don't go if you don't have the proper ID to return.
In addition, you need some proof that you are traveling with the permission of your parents.
""In an effort to prevent international child abduction, many governments have initiated procedures at entry/exit points. These often include requiring documentary evidence of relationship and permission for the child’s travel from the parent(s) or legal guardian if not present. Having such documentation on hand, even if not required, may facilitate entry/departure.""

Many states have agreements in which a valid ID allows you into Canada. A valid ID and copy of birth certificate are recommended for entry back into the US to the same state. But check to see if your state has an agreement with Canada on this. Otherwise you will need a passport.

You will need a passport starting in 2008 only if your are flying. If you are driving, you are fine (providing you have some kind of picture ID or Birth Cert).
Edit: Apparently it doesn't take affect until June of 2008, not the start of 2008 when you will be required to have a passport.

If you are flying, you have a MAJOR problem. Without a passport, even with your parents, you can't go into Canada without a passport!
For now, it's OK if you are driving.

Nothing, you don't need one. When the State Department said you did, they were not prepared to deal with all the applications from the ding-a-lings that waited til the last minute so they threw in the towel.
Once they get back up to speed they will re-institute the requirement which in my opinion is a very good idea. It is a very effective step toward US isolation and border control.
Given the hate I've seen coming from most other countries including Canada, I think it should be very difficult for travel to and from those smug cesspools. I would also add a stiff tax on currency exchange.

US and Canadian immigration authorities are relaxing the new travel document requirements as they pertain to children.
In a change from earlier plans, U.S. and Canadian citizens ages 15 or younger with parental consent will be allowed to cross the borders at land and sea entry points with certified copies of their birth certificates rather than passports.
U.S. and Canadian citizens ages 16 through 18 traveling with school, religious, cultural or athletic groups and under adult supervision will also be allowed to travel with only their birth certificates.

You are SOL, at least I hope you are.
You would need birth certificate and govt ID or parental govt ID plus the same to get you through by land, but also kids need BOTH parents' notorized approval.

ok i totally just did this!!! you have to go online to the TSA website and apply for a passport. once you do that you have to take it to a local post office (take your birth certificate with you) and get the paper stamped saying you applied. when you go through customs or nething else they want to see the paper you printed off and an actual birth certificate - not just a copy. when i went i took the paper from the post office saying i applied but it wasn't the right one - they printed me off the right one but like i said it HAS to be from the TSA website. hope you have fun on your trip - canada is beautiful
