I am getting a 1/2 barrel keg and I need to know what size trash can to use to put the keg in

If you are using a party store to get the keg, ask them if it is possible to reserve a party box from the beer distributor. That is a 1 keg refrigerator and they will usually set it up at your location. It takes some effort by the distributor to do this, so they don't advertise the service (and it's usually free) so you have to ask. They may give you a number to call the distributor yourself. Make the effort because it is so much easier and you won't waste beer trying to get it to pour properly. Ice is also expensive, and the party box eliminates that expense entirely.

A 30 gallon round trash can should be fine. Fill it part way with ice first, drop the keg in, fill it the rest of the way with ice, then pour water (lots of water) on top. The water will increase the surface area of "cold water/ice" against the keg and cool it down faster (and keep it cooler for a long time).

A 20 to 30 gallon is best. That way you have tons of room for ice and the keg. Have fun!!!!

It fits pretty well in a recyling bin if your town recycles. But otherwise I would use just a regular round trash can. (about 3 feet high, 2 feet in diameter approx)

Make sure to put ice all around it to keep it cold and keep your guests happy!
