she's about 5 years old and NEVER used to do this until recently. she poops everywhere besides her litter box. her fav place is in my bathroom right in front of the toilet and she just added the laundry room to her list. i'm going crazy because nothing i have tried is making her stop!!! last night my boyfriend and i thoroughly cleaned the laundry room (which is where her litter box is, nice and quiet), bought her a new litter box with fresh litter and even set off some candles in there. when i woke up this morning...she had pooped again OUTSIDE of her box. i'm really at wits end, help!!!!!!!!!!

-- she's the only cat in the house.
-- she has fleas that i can't seem to get rid of.
-- i've thoroughly cleaned the spots where she has pooped before and got rid of the smell. (i heard that was supposed to help, apparently not)

You need to clean the area with Nature's Miracle or something similar that neutralizes the scent from your cat's perspective. The flea problem could be making her so unhappy that she is going wherever she is without thinking about it.
She could also be sick in some other way and just showing her discomfort. If you have ruled out any disease, you need to get the flea problem under control then you can try confining her to a small room like a bathroom (take up all towels, rugs, magazines or anything else that can be pushed around like litter).
A small room will help her get acquainted again with her good litter box habits. When she has a clean bill of health and has spent some time getting herself back on track, she will be fine.

Medical problems can lead to this. If the cat has used the litter box without a problem before, a checkup would be a good idea, it could associate the litter box with pain. A change of litter can also do this. Then you have to answer the psychological questions. How close are you and those in the house, with the cat. Have there been any big changes, a new cat, different people, working hours, a pet dieing. This could be a sign that the cat is dealing with an emotional issue. Try a vet check-up, see what they say.

Did you recently change the brand of her litter? If so, that could possibly be a reason. If she does it again, I would take her stool and move it into the litter box so that she knows that's where she's supposed to go. She may be confused if her litter has been changed to a different brand, or if the location of the box has been changed a few times. If that doesnt work, you can always try putting her outside and ditching the box all together. As far as the fleas go, I would recommend talking to your veterinarian and putting her on something like Advantage flea and tick. Hope that helps!

Any time a pet starts a new behavior a vet visit is in order to check for health issues. Cats with worms will sometimes poop where they shouldn't.
Are you scooping her box out every day like you should? Are you cleaning it totally once a week and putting fresh litter in?

Is there too much 'fragrance' in the litter, this is repellant to a lot of cats.
Is the box clean?
Do you have a second box? Some cats decide they want one to poop in, and one to pee in.
Can you confine her to a smaller room for the night to keep her contained near a litter box during the time you're asleep?

Definitely ask your vet. If you have changed anything in her environment lately, that can cause stress that will trigger something like this. Even something like moving a litter box can stress them enough to d this, since cats are so sensitive to their surroundings. One other question I would ask is if the cat is declawed. Even if she was declawed 5 years ago, it could cause a problem now. My parents had a cat that did this, and they switched to a wheat litter that was lighter and easier on his paws. Problem solved in his case. Hope you figure it out though.

When she shows signs of going to go to the toilet quickly put her out! Eventually she will get the idea.
Or show her that she has to go into the litter box by doing the same thing but putting her in the litter box instead outside.
Is it because you are not letting her out?

Since this is a newly evolved problem she might be sick. You need to take her to the vet to get checked out and they can hopefully help you get rid of the fleas as well.

Have you changed cat litter brands lately? Sometimes they don't like the scented ones, or any change at all.
