An unexamined life in not worth living...neither is an unexamined faith. God gave you a brain and the ability to think and reason for a purpose. When you test your faith, you only make it stronger. It is not at all wrong to study ancient societies and their beliefs, it gives you a background for understanding your own faith. Frankly, I find it pretty sad to see how many Christians know so little about Judiasm and the history of the tribes of Isreal when it is the foundation of their own beliefs. Study and learn, God gave you the ability to do so, and wants your faith in Him strengthened by your own knowledge and wisdom.

Yes, they should. In fact, it should actually be a requirement.
I am a faithful, Bible-believing Christian, but I have studied many different cultures and religions. I have also studied all of the arguments for atheism and non-belief.
The end result is that I am a Christian by conscious choice, not by default, or because my parents dragged me to Church when I was a kid, or because I just don't know any different.
The study of other religions and societies has actually helped make my faith grow stronger.

I'm no Christian but I think it would teach anyone (not just Christians) a lot about the ancient world, and how similar the faiths are (to an extent) But I doubt they could...or would for that matter, they're too close-minded to do it in some cases, others just think it's heathen and demonic...sad really.

Anyone who is on a spiritual path should study and understand the concept of religions and their basis for development. Religion is a narrow slice of what the concept of God is.
It is important to understand the past, in order to create the future.

Christians do study history, just like everyone else. Some of them collect things. Artificats are cool. You're just not allowed to worship them.

It is not sinful to preserve history. It is sinful to turn away from Biblical beliefs. It helps solidify our faith to know how our faith contrasts with other belief systems.
