I have a few friends that have this habbit of pigging out on fatty or sweet foods, than right after going on the treadmill to "walk it off." And honestly, I have to say, they don't seem to be gaining any additional weight. I was also watching a tv show the other day and someone slipped and ate 3 grilled cheese sandwiches, and again, they went on the treadmill to "walk it off." So, yesterday I had a weak moment, because I had bad sweet tooth. I slipped and ate like 4 Rice Crispy treats and glass of Mt. Dew. I also nibbled on some chips. Feeling terribly guilty, I decided to take on this "instant" weight loss approach and went on my excercise bike for 45 minutes. Well this morning, I stepped on the scale and noticed I'd lost 2 lbs! Now, I cannot stand excercising, so I rarely ever do it. So this seemingly "instant" weight loss is like a new found discovery for me. Is shedding a few extra lbs really as easy as simply walking the fat off? Can it really be an overnight thing??

I've never had a severe weight problem all my life, so I never really had to worry about weight loss until just the last few years (I'm 34). I used to laugh at the notion of pigging out on chips and dip, candy etc.. than "walking it off." I was skeptical, until it happened to me just yesterday and noticed the results this morning!

NO- I do not take any diet pills (or any medications) at all. AND I do not have a habit of pigging out on sweets, fatty foods etc.. I jus had a weak moment yesterday and tried this approach and was shocked at the results. That's why I was just wondering if weight loss is really this "instant."

it could just be water weight. some pro athletes lose 20+ lbs during games just in sweat.

Weight fluctuates from day to day. The 2 pound loss from 1 day to the next was mostly a change in water weight.

However... the walk-it-off approach, while not causing instant weight loss, is still a great habit. Although not a great diet plan. As long as it's a reaction to losing control on occasion, and not your plan for weight loss.

Carbs are stored in the liver for fast energy as glycogen. When you workout, you use your glycogen stores first. Therefore, after "pigging out", if you exercise immediately, you will prevent that excess amount of glycogen from being stored as fat, because you will use it up working out instead.

Sure, Liposuction. Otherwise, no, as far as lasting weight-loss goes. Get a exercise calorie program (health.yahoo used to have a helpful one) and see how many calories a given exercise over a given time burns (such as a stationary bike) and compare that to how many calories your favorite little "slip" contains and you will find out how much exercise is required to make up for a slip (always too much in my experience).

Most quick-loss diets run on the same principle. That is, to cause your body to massively dehydrate in order to fool the scale into saying you have lost weight (a notable example is the grapefruit diet. Eat a bunch of grapefruits for a few days and Wa-la you will have lost 5 or more pounds. But, if you quit the diet you gain it all back in one day as you get rehydrated.)

My best advise is to not starve yourself of your little treats but to make room in your diet for a sweet snack everyday. To do this simply eat a little healthier at main meals or a little less, so that you have a calorie deficit that you can fill with a decadent snack. Just be sure to avoid the late night snacks if possible as they are the most likely calories to not be used (due to lack of activity).

Don't think of a diet as a punishment but instead as a lifestyle. Find a balance that works for you that you can live with or you will never have lasting results. Instead of thinking of it as work exercise should be fun (try to find an active hobby that you enjoy or a fun way to exercise. I enjoy listening to upbeat music I can sing to while exercising or just watching my favorite tv show :) )

Also, you can't trust a scale. Your body weight will shift many pounds per day due to the gaining or loss of water without any noticeable physical difference. For the most accurate measurements weigh yourself at the same time everyday and compare average changes from week to week.

yes..weight loss can be instantaneous but not fat loss, there is a huge difference. rapid weight loss is always nothing more than excess water that is lost either through perspiration or through the urine. any fat that is burned during walking is not from any food items that were recently digested as it takes many hours for those nutrients to be converted to lipids in the body.

if you don't like exercise you need to find something that you do enjoy. the human body is not designed to be sedentary and a lack of physical exercise will have a negative effect on your health and quality of life.

ive never heard of someone losing weight that fast, but lets say u did do the instant weightloss, and you still ate junk food and lost weight....either you are using pills, which isnt the correct way because it is unhealthy and could cause health problems on down the road. Or you just ate junk food, and exercised, and lost weight, then you would lose the weight, but in the end you would not be doing yourself any good because you will still be causing yourself health problems....for example.. not all fat people have diabeties. you could get a serious health problems...there is a such thing as good calories and bad calories....

They aren't instantly losing weight...they are just maintaining their current weights by trying to burn the extra calories they consumed.

The 2 lb difference in your weight is probably just water. Always weigh yourself at the same time of day, morning right after you pee is best because that is the closest to your body's "natural" weight
