Here's my concept, impact from free fall will be absorbed by layering materials. I really wanted my project to be simple than from my classmates' designs. Anyway, here's the layers.. First, a medium sized box.. then inside are crumpled newspaper.. then a small sized box.. cotton inside with the egg covered with bubble film. Do you think the egg would survive? Actually I tested it from a 5 floor drop and it survived. But does anyone have tips on how to improve its structure. Thanks!

I've been thinking if I could add a balloon to make it balance while it falls. Is it ok?

packing peanuts will help a lot. anything that will increase the time that the impact takes will decrease the amount of force felt on the egg. your on the right track for sure :)

i think the only room for improvement might come in replacing the crumpled newspaper --- with packing peanuts. the peanuts offer more of an elastic response (meaning they displace the impact well and almost return to their original shape). i think with newspaper, that once it is repeatedly dropped, the paper will become fatigued and lose its ability to displace the impact force. however, a 5 story drop survival is very good -- so you may not need to do anything. if there are mutiple drops, then a consideration could be taken.

Sounds like a pretty elegant design to me. The trick is packing the cotton and the newspaper at just the right density to absorb the energy. Not to tight, not to loose.

Just use polystyrene foam chips of sufficient thickness (your outer box will probably do with the egg inside at the centre). Congrats for a successful project.

Foam. (Like a mattress or pillow stuffing) You don't want to use bubble wrap because after they pop, there is no more cushioning. With the foam, you want it to be almost as thick as the egg, and wrapped around completely.

No, I think you have it. I always wanted to create some thing complex, but you have the K.I.S.S. method. If it didn't break at five stories, I wouldn't tamper with it. Good Luck.

suspend an inner box with rubber bands. Can't be beat.
