They do an intense background check. Criminal history will be checked out. You will have to list everywhere you went to school, worked, and lived. Everytime you left the country for vacation or business has to be listed. Any drug use, gambling problems, etc. They will have you list someone that new you at every place you put down as a former residence. They will also ask for three people that know you well. Funny thing is when they go to talk to those people they will ask them three people that they know of that knew you and then go talk to those people. This makes it harder for you to plant people. If you think you they won't find out about something you've done or some type of criminal activity, think again. They will have a file on your entire life. You may even have to take a lie detector test in some instances.

They perform normal background checks for things like criminal history and time spent out of the country, but they also can do personal interviews with your references, and references usually cannot be family members. Every year of your working life must be accounted for and every home you lived in listed.

There are probably other areas as well, but I can't be sure since I don't have a Top Secret clearance.

EDIT:
Oh I forgot one thing. Most people don't knwo this, but they check your credit report as well. Someone in bad debt may be more apt to be blackmailed.

They check your credit also - if you have any bad debts or credit problems (like if you are too much in debt) - they wanna know - because you could get put into a position where someone could bribe you. They also check and talk to your friends, relatives, and associates going back as far as 20 years - depending on how old you are.

All kinds of stuff. Any criminal record you might have, credit report, stuff like that. Rmember when they had you fill out those forms with every place you lived since you were born and someone you knew then? They check that out. They call your friends, they ask the people that you listed who else you knew, and they talk to them. They talk to old teachers, principals, ect... They dig into your life as hard as they can. They are about to entrust you with all kinds of secrets, they need to know who they are giving access to.

Let's put it this way... if you've ever done anything about which you might be concerned... they'll find it... even if it's not a matter of public record.

But, if you're thinking about TS clearance just to get at information that's classified--as a few posters recently have, forget it. Sensitive information is "compartmentalized." That means, if you don't need it to do your job, you won't have access to it... you may not even know it exists.

Pretty much everything. Arrest records, court records, medical records, credit history, and numerous interviews with your friends, family, coworkers, and acquaintances. They go back at least 10 years in your history.

If you have anything negative in your history, be sure to divulge it. It's better for you to tell them and let them investigate it than it is for them to find out you're hiding something. That in itself is pretty much a disqualifier, when something like an old DUI or something isn't necessarily.

Everything that can be checked. I had a buddy who's family called him asking what he'd done wrong because the FBI was snooping aroud. Good luck...unless your a terrorist in which case I hope you get caught.
