Another related question, does the calorie burn become exponential the more I walk?

yea, the more u walk the more actual FAT u will burn rather than just ready ENERGY

Ten minutes only burns about 90 calories

how many calories are burned depends on how much "you" weigh and the speed or intensity that the walking is performed at.

and yes the amount of calories that you burn is increased when both the intensity and duration of exercise is increased.

For moderate walking:
Calories burned = 0.029 x weight (lbs) x time (minutes)

For Vigorous walking:
Calories burned = 0.048 x weight (lbs) x time (minutes)

100 calories per mile is a good rule of thumb. No it is not exponential.

Calories are fuel. You need a certain amount of fuel to haul your carcass a certain distance. If your car gets 30 mpg, you need one gallon to go 30 miles or 2 gallons to go 60. Same thing.

Between 40 and 50 cals based the speed you walk 3.2 vs 4.2 mph. As far as the second question, I have read that as your heart rate increases, your metabolic rate increases; your body will burn more cals at the steady rate of excercise.

it depends on how fast you are walking and how much you weigh. check out this site, just type in ur weight and what ind of walking you do, how fast etc. and it will tell you..hope this helps!
