Okay, I'll try to give some straight answers...

More recoil? Recoil is a function of many factors, bullet weight being one. The .40 S & W is available in more bullet weights so I'll have to say that the .40 has more recoil.

Which has more power? The .357 Sig should be the better stopper since it is designed to duplicate the performance of the .357 Magnum revolver cartridge. The .40 S & W comes closer to the old .45 acp and the .357 Magnum is recognized as the best man stopper yet. So I'll have to say that the .357 Sig is 'more' powerful. NOTE: The .357 is a bottle necked .40 S & W with specially made casings to handle the higher pressure.

Which has more muzzle flip? In the same pistol type I would have to say that the .357 Sig is going to have more felt snap because it is a higher velocity cartridge but it is going to be very similar to your hottest forties.

Best.

H

Dude, I am in the same boat...I am trying to decide between a Glock 27 or a Glock 33. My "research" (internet only as I have never shot a 357 SIG) seemed to point towards the 357 SIG having slight more recoil, muzzle flip, and power than the .40 S&W. But as a result, 357SIG has deeper penetration which could lead to over penetration, so the .40 S&W may be the better "defense" round (also .40 S&W ammo is more widely available and cheaper).

Then I found out that the Glock 357 SIG and .40 S&W barrels of the same size are interchangeable, so...

I'm reserving the final decision until I test fire a 357 SIG, but I think I'll get a Glock 33 and then buy a Glock 27 barrel, so then I'll have 2 pistols and now I don't have to decide...of course I still got to buy all that ammo.

I have Glocks in both 40, model 23, and 357Sig, model 32. The recoil is pretty much the same as long as you are using comparable ammo... Meaning standard over the counter loads... Not "hot" ammo such as Buffalo Bore.

I totally prefer the 357 for what I use it for. It is my hiking,camping,off-roading gun. I load it with 13 rounds of buffalo bore ammo and I'm set.

However I'm not a huge fan of the 357, Sig or magnum, as a carry or home defense round. Too fast. Even if you hit the suspect, the bullet can still travel very far... going through wall and such. I don't want to take that chance in my home or in public so I carry the 40 in those situations.

But to me, the 357 is just more fun to shoot... but I can't really tell you why... Persona; preference I guess.

The two are very comparable. The .357 sig out of a Glock pistol seems firmer and the recoil faster to me than the .40. But it has been more than a few years since I have fired one. Honestly, I don't think there is enough of a difference to matter one way or another. The .40 ammo is also cheaper.

My advice, by the .40. Since the .357 Sig is a necked down .40 cal round all you need to do is buy the extra barrel and now you have both calibers.

Some other interesting opinions...

I would go with .45. A lot of people do not like .40 but want something bigger than a 9. .357 sig can get expensive and hard to find in some cases. I would also look at into as many manufacturers before you make a decision. Do not go with Glock or Beretta because that is what you see on TV. I prefer Springfield Armory XD series over Glock.

You canot go wrong with 357 There is more recoil and a buttload more power The 357 however is more expensive when it comes to ammo Try a Ruger SP101 Nice revolver, They have specs and pics on their websithe. I have had a lot of handguns and this is by far my favorite. 357 IS the benchmark when It comes top home defense firepower.
