one month is really not enough to say what you are saying, you are generalizing maybe not as much as someone who passes negative judgment having never been somewhere or experience a group of people but one month is very short, I have lived in China for some time and I still have barely scratched the surface of cultural, social and political understanding
it is just like the Chinese thinking all westerns are rich, yellow haired and blue eyed, or I have been asked why is every man in the USA left handed b/c they knew two Americans who were
when I first moved to China I thought the Chinese were extremely moral, a generalization, after some time I realized they are not any different than any other group of people, I also thought that every Chinese student was perfect, not true, there are stupid people in China like there are in the US
China has a long way to go to be in a position to take the place of the other leading super powers
But yes, you can find all kinds of lies as well as truths out there in the media
I am glad that you were able to clear up some of your own misconceptions

China is a great country, I lived there for about 2 years. I don't know where the idea that Chinese are"mindless drones" come from, probably from the same "mindless drones" that do not look further then the length of their noses. If the weather was nicer in China, I would probably live THERE as the people are very nice and the food is great but I presume it's always the same: UNKNOWN MAKES UNWANTED,

What a great point you brought up. I have been amazed and disappointed by the Chinese I know and have met....just like my fellow Americans! We are all people with common interests. It may be comforting for people of either country to think that they are good and the others are bad but what an uneducated assumption! I am a successful businessman with my own international company. My advice is to enjoy each other. Chinese and Americans are really good for each other.

What you say is monumentally true.
I live here as an ex pat and believed all the crap till I saw first hand for myself. China is nothing short of awesome.
As for a few of the answers I see here. I really wish people would look at our own backyard before they comment on others. What happened 18 years ago in China has little baring on today. Yet we have committed Tianamens in other countries and China has produced none.
My biggest argument is not take my word for all that I say, but rather come here for a visit and find out for yourselves.
Signed, an ex pat from the USA living in the heart of China
Peace
Jim

There's a lot of false information about China because media consumers in the west really don't know how to find out the truth.
People mostly rely on information provided by the big media...and they only dole out things they want people to know about China.
If people are really interested in finding out what was true or not about China and its people, they only have to surf the net.
I guess most people don't have the time to be informed about a country half way around the world.
Some good China news and info websites in english are:

Yea. North American and European ppl don't know much about East Asia basically. Not only about China, but also about other Asian countries.
Lots of information on the Internet are just particles of the whole story. We shouldn't believe them literally but should check if any obvious proofs, datas, and logical explanations were attached.
But I also have to admit there are roughness, deceit, and lack in common sense in their life very much.
China have been experiencing domestic conflicts for more thousand years. They will have another internal conflicts within 30 years again.

It is just like any other societies, there are misconceptions. The diversity of people are all around us. Smart, cultural, stupid, and even rude people are everywhere including China and US. Each person is different, whether he/she is Chinese or American has nothing to do with it.

Western Medias have been giving out too many biased report on China, causing lots of misconceptions. Most of Chinese don't eat dogs; like in US, most of them are animal lovers; they are not forced to take abortion in their 2nd pregnancy; they are not the communists you think from 60's movies...as far as democracy and human rights are concerned----well, look how the American version of democracy are working out in Iraq! Before you start debating other countries' human right issues, please return the land to native Indians and withdraw your troop from other countries first.

This just happens to be the way westerners feel about Orientals. Air of arrogance thinking that others are inferior to the big old US of A.
