It all really depends on your personal tastes. As most people have pointed out, red wines pair better with red meats and heavier dishes, and white wines go better with chicken, fish and lighter fare. Something to consider is matching flavors to compliment the food that is being served. Another thing to keep in mind is that you don't have to spend a lot of money to get a good bottle of wine. Most people find the task of acquiring the "right bottle wine" daunting, but most reputable wine merchants should have someone around to help you find the right bottle.

Personally, my standby red is Cote Du Rhone Parallel 45, it is relatively inexpensive, and can match up with most anything.

Red wines, being more acidic go well with acidic and/or fatty foods. White wines, being lighter and fruitier go well with lighter entrees like salads, fish and mild chicken dishes. Very sweet dessert wines, go well with dessert of course. Cheese always goes well with just about any wine. The best way of course is trial and error and I have found many reds that go well with fish and salads and many whites that complimented spaghetti or pork roast very nicely.

I'm assuming you mean wine - in which case there's a basic rule for beginners:
-Red wine goes with red meat (steak, beef, etc.)
-White wine goes with white meat (chicken, seafood, etc.)
