It's acutally a simple surgery. First the doctor will inject some local anaethesia into the base of the affected toe on either side of the web space or may be in a ring form around the base of the toe. This is the most painful part of the whole procedure. Subsequently u will feel no pain once the anaesthetic take effect. After that a small incision is made at the side of the ingrown toe nail and the doctor will then remove the affected part by spliting the nail. No pain at all. Lastly the doctor will clean out the nail matrix so that the IGTN wil not recur. Post op pain can be controlled with oral painkillers.
Don';t worry, u will survive it and will be glad that the IGTN is removed :)

My husband actually had an infected ingrown toenail removed just recently. He tried to doctor it himself with Epsom Salt, Neosporin and bandages, but nothing worked and it got badly infected.

He made an appointment with the podiatrist who gave him between 4 - 6 needles of Novocaine to numb the large toe and then he easily pulled the ingrown toenail out. My husband said that the needles hurt a little, but nothing like the pain of stubbing the toenail or having it hurt and throb constantly. The doctor also cleaned it afterwards, put some antibacterial medicine on it and wrapped it. He told my husband to soak it once in the morning and again at night.

About 2 weeks later the toenail looked a lot better, but he is still recovering from the infection. I know it is scary, but just think of how much better you will feel when it is over and done with...no more pain.

Best of luck to you!

The shots are no fun, but it only hurts for a couple of seconds, and compared to the ingrown toenail, it's nothing!!

The shot is the worst part of it (much like getting a shot at the dentist). After that, you might feel pressure or stinging, but NOTHING like you feel currently when you stub it.

It'll take a few days, but the relief you will get from having this taken care of is DEFINITELY worth it.

If you are at all squeamish though, ask him to put up a drape so you can't see what is happening. It doesn't hurt, but it is kind of gross.

Good luck, and trust me you're going to feel SO much better once this is over.

I had it done. The needle is nothing compared to the pain you are in all the time right now...
You will wonder why in the world you never did it before.
