The water hyacinth is a South American floating plant which grows at the water's surface. The base of the leaves are swollen and filled with air spaces. This keeps the plant afloat. The roots are long and fibrous. This acts as ballast to keep the plant upright. The blue flowers look vaguely like hyacinth, hence the name.

Water hyacinth helps keep the water clean by absorbing waste through its roots. The roots also provide shelter for many small fish and other creatures. In its native habitat it lives in association with other organisms which feed on it. Because of this, the plant grows very rapidly. When removed from its native habitat, it has nothing to eat it and can quickly cover the surface of the water. This decreases the oxygen supply in the water and the fish begin to die, which decrease the oxygen even more. Humans find the plant a great nusicance because it makes boating and fishing difficult. The problem is quite severe in Africa. One African biologist found a tiny beetle which ate the plant. He introduced the insect and it was quite successful at reducing the amount of hyacinth in the lakes and rivers.

It grows and spreads automatically and very fast. It consumes great quantity of water for itself and harms the environment. It is considered dangerous. It grows on stable water and normally not on flowing water. It's growth results in many disadvantages. It creates odour in the nearby area. It helps grow mosquitoes as water is soaked by the hyacinth and mud is created underneath.

In Pune(Maharashtra, India) some institutes tried to find out its useful products, but in vein. They tried to make delicious chutneys etc from it but it is not liked by the masses.

It is foreign plant in our country and disliked like "congress grass" or "gajar gawat". There may be some useful in gradients in it but not extracted so far. There is one old 'saying' that every herb has some medicinal qualities.
