If you plan on migrating LEGALLY, welcome and hope you enjoy it. If you're planning to come ILLEGALLY, stay the F*CK OUT.
Assuming it's legal, try going east of LA like Pomona , Walnut etc. They might be a little cheaper for you, Good Luck, if the crime don't get ya, the earth quakes shake ya, then the rent will certainly brake ya. Hope you can speak Spanish as well.

Everyone who has answered this question is correct in saying cheaper in Los Angeles means more dangerous. Most people move to Los Angeles with the idea that they are going to become famous, and meet lots of people. But they usually end up living in the streets...If you want cheap and still be able to experience Los Angeles it's better to look at surrounding areas. Go to apartments.com, Check out apartments in the Inland Empire or certain parts of Orange County. If you see something you like feel free to message me with questions about the area. P.S. what is your profession?

The San Fernando valley has some cheap areas that are pretty safe, like North Hollywood and some surrounding areas, you just don't want to go north of there. The valley is about ten minutes from hollywood which is where everybody knows, but hollywood is not all it's cracked up to be, I know I lived there. There is a lot of crime. It's hard to tell you about every part of L.A, but the most desireable parts of L.A are very expensive. The Valley is your best bet, it's relativeley chep and close to all, and pretty safe if you stay in the right parts. Hope that helped.

My God, you seem like such an angry person....haha...but after reading what everyone has written back to you i can understand why...but i still have to laugh especially at the last guy with his little riddle, really cracked me up!!
I'm also in England and would love to move out to Los Angele's...so much so i have completed a teaching course which will help me travel out there...and I'm leaving for LA next week Tue to check out the place.. i cant wait. :D
i will try and give some feedback to you on the topic when i get back, if your still interested..just ask another question about LA in two weeks time, and i might see it and reply back to you with a sensible answer.
but for now just try to do your research, your in school you said?
which means you have plenty of time to research the areas.
Good Luck though.

You can pretty much find cheaper areas in every city. Not sure where you are looking in L.A. but try looking into Long Beach which is in L. A. county. I don't know your budget but I'm sure you can find something in the local paper. Try looking in the Grunion Gazette classified: http://www.gazettes.com/classoindex.html
Good place to start. Hope that helps. Also check out the Press Telegram and L. A. Times

In LA, Cheapest places to live mean not the nice areas. We are the land of extremes, with multi-million dollar homes minutes away from some really nasty parts of town.
Cheaper also means farther away, with translates into a hellish commute.
My advise, try to live as close to your job as is feasible. It will prevent taking years off your life in aggravation.
And ignore the knuckleheads on this board, Your accent will work like a charm on the natives/

Cheap means unsafe in LA. Any nice area to live is very expensive. The South Bay area has a few not quite so expensive areas. Hawthorne, Gardena, Lawndale, parts of Torrance, Inglewood.

LM is correct about Brits living in the Santa Monica area, my son has just moved there - really expensive - but you can walk to most places and the beach is only about 1 mile from where they live

Cheapest area means it's poorer and more dangerous and crime ridden. So to South Central LA, it's cheap and not too safe. For cheaper living, stay away from west LA and OC.

In my experience, the Brits feel most at home in the Santa Monica area. While expensive, you could probably find a roomie easily... Good luck!
