..Trains do mostly run on time, perhaps they didn't about five or six years ago but they have improved now.

Even though I am against privatisation of services that isn't really the reason for why they did for a while go so wrong.

Basically in the 60's the car exploded, city centres were made car friendly, people were ironically encouraged to drive and railways were seen as old fashioned an fading out. So for decades train stations were closed down and under funded. Until in the last decade or so riding the rails have become very popular again because of the environmental thing I guess. The whole privatisation being blamed really was a coincidence that the popularity of riding on trains became popular as it was privatised.

You can certainly say that train tickets are overpriced but you can't say they don't run on time because they do!

There is no such thing as "British Rail" and hasn't been since the days of Mrs Thatcher. In South London, we now have "South Eastern Railways" whch replaced "Connex". "Connex" was a French company and they produced the worst service known in railway history. Virgin Trains, which run the West Coast Mainline Service, is owned by the Virgin Group (Sir Richard Branson). As for the other companies, I don't think anybody knows who or which nationality the owners are. Our problems have recently been caused through poor and negligent line maintenance. All the delays caused by the derailments have had a major impact but as the Government had a stake in the companies responsible for those disasters, they are holding Virgin and GNER responsible by removing their tenders. The reason for the removal of their tenders is simply that both Virgin and GNER have been having unacceptable levels of cancellations and delays. As if these had nothing to do with the fact that no trains could pass Hatfield for some time and the East Coast Line was blocked with a derailed Virgin train. All the engineering works that have gone on since have caused major disruption and the recent floods haven't helped but sadly, according to the British Government, the train companies are responsible for the cancellations and delays and not the companies that were reckless in the repair and non-repair of the lines that the trains run on. The only thing that I find is that it's time we did have a Nationalised Railway again. At least then we had timetables that allowed for connecting trains and a set of fares that were clear to everybody. Since privatisation, many stations have closed and in some cases, even branch lines were shut down. We can't rebuild these lines as in some areas, the land has been developed. Now I'd like to ask, "why wasn't this question on time"? Like, 25 years ago! LOL

once upon a time long ago the railways where all run by individual companies everything ran on time and the trains were clean and shiny and the staff where courteous and helpful, and then the wicked Goverment wanted some money and decided to nationalise them, they ignored all the good wise men who said it would never work and went ahead with their plan, and its been downhill ever since they got greedy and wouldnt invest they gave in to union demands for high wages, didnt maintain the network and generally made a hash of things (no change there then)
Years went by and it got worse, they shut lines and stations, they cut services in an attempt to save money. So finally they gave it back to private companies but the damage was too great to save our once pretty good rail system.. basically its been f~~~ked up again

British Rail is mentioned in the Bible

Theres always some excuse like leaves on the line or a bomb scare.I was on a train once going to London and the train was delayed at Orpington for a while and everyone was made to get off because someone had planted a bomb.

It is written into their Charter to distrupt the lives of as many people as possible, to force them into cars so they can be taxed...
