You've got the right idea, but are going about it wrong.

Chiggers hate sulfur, it's true. However, it's supposed to be applied topically.. Powdered sulfur is available in most pharmacies and should be applied to exposed areas and to the openings in your clothing (waist, cuffs, pant legs). You can also help to reduce the access chiggers have by tucking your pants into your socks and/or boots.

Also, repellents with DEET or permethrin (available in most hardware stores) should provide a fair degree of protection.

Just keep moving, and don't lie down. You should fair well.

I put clear nail polish on my chigger bites and they cleared up. Suffocates the little chiggers. Never heard of eating match heads. I wouldn't recommend it, though.

When I was young we would eat cream of tartar thinking it would prevent bug bites. The sulfur on the outside will help, but I don't think it has any effect on the inside. Eating matches is not a good idea.

i do believe that is wives tale and its probably not good. the only way to get rid of them is to check the bed and find them and clean them out.
