By attacking, I assume you mean she'll grab her back feet and chew and gnaw on the claws. This is normal. She's trimming her claws.

If you want to prevent her from doing this, you'll need to trim her claws for her or take her to a groomer that specialized in cats or have the vet do it. It might be worthwhile to have a vet or groomer so they can show you exactly how to do it. The trick is to have someone hold the cat down on its side firmly and the use a trimmer meant for pets to trim the nails. If you look at the claw, you'll see the quick (the skin underneath the claw). You want to cut above the quick.

I had a cat that would bite and chew her back claws there was nothing wrong with her I just think she done it because they weren't quite to her desired length. She was quite a posh cat and liked things done a certain way. Just like I hated the sound of the chewing. I thought that the back claws were important obviously not. Maybe your cat is just started this annoying habit because of her traumatic experience or you are just being more vigilant in watching her. I have a cat that has a permanent wee problem and I always notice new things with him. I think its just something you'll have to get use to.

My cat has a good old nosh on her rear claws. We have thought it normal for her to do it,she really gets into it but doesnt hurt herself. She is just trimming her nails!
I wouldnt worry unless she seems in pain/it gets sore. You know your cat best really,as in if there is something really wrong.

I would see another vet. She could have a severe nail-bed infection, which will spread, or burrowing mites between her toes. Imagine having permanent itchy toes.....nasty. She needs help fast, as if she breaks the skin, there are numerous very nasty infections that will just leap right on in there.

Hi hun,

It is likely that they are just growing too long and she is shortening them - or in fact that she wishes to sharpen them even more! My cat really goes for it and gnaws at his back claws often.

As long as she is not making herself bleed, I really wouldn't worry about it.

It might be nothing: Cats do that to trim their claws, if they start to get too long. You might try trimming them, or having a groomer do so.

Good luck!

Cats are extremely fastidious animals and are always cleaning. She is merely looking after her claws and feet. If she has been to the vets then please don't worry.

does she make them bleed?

if not it could just be her natural instinct to chew her claws, do you keep her claws trimmed?
