The best way is to ask for an appointment from your local fire station and interview them. That's how we decide whether a career is for us.

Career planning is a deliberate process of knowing WHO we are so that we can be sure WHERE we want to go or WHAT we want to be at some defined point in the future. It involves an analysis of career/job options that are new to you. Career analysis is based on accurate, valid and timely information from --- reading, interviewing primary resources persons and direct observation of those persons while doing their job.

Peace and blessings!

Most large departments have annual testing. Testing usually consists of a written general fire knowledge test, or a general knowledge test, as well as a physical agility test. The physical agility test requires not only strength, but endurance as well. Strong upper body strength is important as is stamina.

Those same departments are also usually civil service, so make sure you qualify age wise....not past your 35th birthday.

The process time can vary depending on the number of candidates, and the indiviual department. The written test is first, graded, and those below the cut off score (which varies) are removed from the process, within a couple of weeks, the physical (usually timed event) takes place, those over the time limit are removed from the process, then the background checks, these can be lengthy, some may take up to six weeks. Overall you could be looking at 3 to 4 months from the first test date, to hire (assuming you clear everything).

Drawback is that some departments will put you through their own academy, others will require you having completed the academy PRIOR to applying, check to see before you start the paperwork.....:)

Good luck
