I am married to an active duty military, and I am command sponsored. We just very recently got my son in the Philippines command sponsored so he can come live with us. We are currently getting him a passport back in the Philippines. My plan is to go there and bring him back with me. My passport is stamped SOFA status so I can come and go Japan (our current assignent.) My question is besides a passport, orders, and proper military identification. Is their anything else my son needs?

Be sure to check if your passport will allow you to travel to the PI. Most military passports are only for travel to and from the overseas base and the US. They can not be used to travel on non-military sponsered/ordered travel so you may not be able to use it to pick up your son since you will, most likely, be going on civilian airlines.

Be sure you have your son's birth certificates (if he was born in the Phillapines, you may even want to order extra certified copies to keep handy for the future..just in case), his shot and health records and any school records he may have. You will also need to apply for a social security card ASAP, While he won't need it to travel, you will need it for tax purposes and for enrolling him in school and/or childcare. Also, if your current husband is not the child's father and his biological father is in the picture, it is advisable to get a letter from him stating he gives your permission to take your son into another country. If there are any child custody, visitation or support orders involved, be sure to carry copies of those as well. If there are court ordered custody agreements in place, you will also need to notify the courts that the child is leaving the country.

It might be a good idea to get a SOFA visa stamped into his passport upon arrival. I assume your spouse's assignment is in Okinawa Prefecture. If that is the case, there is an Honorary Consul for the Philippines there. Your son should report his presence to that official as well.
