Yes.

I had signed up for a six year enlistment under the advanced electronics program. My MOS wish list included all the cool aviation electronics aircrew MOS’s.

Then, during week 2 of boot, they showed us the USS Forestall movie (the classified stuff you don't see on the History Channel). They turned off the projector, turned on the lights and asked, "Does anyone want to change their aviation MOS?" About 15 hands went up, including mine.

They gave us our MOS lists back then turned off the lights again for our next film, "Ballistic Missile Submarine."

“Three months on. Three months off. Hazardous duty pay and steaks on Saturday. Hawaii, Scotland..."

The lights came on again..."Who would like to volunteer for submarines?" Mine, and bout 10 other hands went up.

I filled out my new MOS request list, ET, FT, RM, IC and some funny one I remembered from the movies...Sonar Tech.

Sonar Technician Submarine...what an adventure!

You Navy folks are lucky. My husband has had the same duty station for 3 years. We don't get to negotiate orders like the Navy does. We are just handed orders one day---with no warning, etc.
This is our first duty station and quite possibly the worst in the Air Force. I can't wait to PCS!!!

Glad to hear you wound up in an NEC you really like. I had a shipmate who was sent through Defense Language Institute where they taught him fluent Mandarin Chinese, without a trace of his South Georgia accent. After completing that course he became the Supply officer at Naval Hospital Rota Spain!
