One word: Corn.

Farmers are converting record acres to more corn so they can sell it to ethanol producers. The commodities price of corn was sky-high this spring. Corn also feeds the cattle to produce beef and milk, feeds the chickens which produce meat and eggs, the hogs that give you pork and bacon and hot dogs, and of course gets sold to ADM and other places that produce high fructose corn syrup. Then there's transportation costs of getting the corn to the processor because of the high price of gas.

If whatever food you think is expensive, you can trace it back to corn and the ethanol boom.

because everything else is going up. fruits have taken a major hit due to the unpredicatable winter we have had, and veggies are taking a big hit because of the extreme heat we are experiencing so i think all this global warming is ruining our veggies. we have 4 tomato plants planted on our front porch and we have tons of green tomatos but no red ones yet. it is taking much longer this year than last year.

It depends on what you buy. If you buy generic brands instead of name brands they aren't as expensive. Also, look for items on sale. Shop for fresh produce at a farmer's market and you can save money.
