I've been to his office before, of course. The dogs go nuts and the cats yowl all day, but he insists it is better not to feed them when they are in his clinic... He says it is better for their immune systems not to offer them any food at all... Of course, when they do manage to steal food, he calls them moochers. People say he's a good vet. Do you think he is right?

Surgery may be one reason, yes, true, but none of the animals get any food, and if anything, the more sick animals, or ones coming out of surgery, are the ones that get fed if at all. . The others, the ones he kennels, get nothing for days. when they go home, they are healthier and, see, too, have an appetite, which the owners appreciate. They also make less messes if they eat less. Works well all around.
I never wanted to be a Vet, because I have always had other interests. Don't try to hurt my feelings there.....

Dogs are not really supposed to be fed the way PETA says we should , PETA is run by a bunch of people with ID 10 T errors. (write taht down with no spaces if you are wondering)
Dogs are basicaly scavengers. They naturally will eat any time the get a chance. If theres a lot they eat it , if theres little they eat it. MOST dogs people have for pets are overweight. SO i can see some logic behind not feeding for a few days . When i raise dogs, i would feed them well for a few days then off for a few days and if you had ever seen my dogs you would never say they were being starved. My Pits would have been show winners if i believed in ear cropping and the like. But i didnt want to butcher the dogs so they could compete. very heavily muscled and gentle as can be. When i was feeding them daily, they were getting fat. and had less energy. Dogs are not humans , all you people should stop anthropomorphizing animals.

An animal facing or recovering from surgery doesn't need food, they are usually in and out of the vet's office within 2-3 days.

However, if we are boarding our pet while we are on vacation, we leave food with the vet's office to feed our pet; we know they will get water. I don't understand the reasoning behind not feeding an animal, we have never been faced with that situation before. My oldest daughter works for a vet and she says they feed all the animals at a certain time each day, and clean up any messes they make.

A 20% reduction in normal calorie intake is ok, but not feeding for days? That just sounds stupid. One fasting day a week is ok. Not 'days'. It can cause lipidosis in cats if they don't eat, and I'm sure other problems as well.

My vet feeds the ones in the kennel, unless there's surgery slated for a particular animal.

And ANY diabetic animal should be eating something every few hours to maintain blood glucose levels. Not feeding for even 12 hours can result in a diabetic coma and you'd be loosing the animal.

before surgey they shouldn't eat and for a few hrs after surgery they shouldn't eat.

if they are in his clinic because of being too sick to be treated at home, they do need to eat inorder to get stronger and healthier so they can go home. he should have the owners bring in their own food so they are eating the same food they do at home because this may cause upset stomachs in some cats a sudden change of food.

I' ve worked in three different animal hospitals as a vet-tech, And I've never seen or heard of this. It doesn't make sense, mammals need to eat especially when healing. However if the animals are only staying over night which is usually the case, this may be prudent.

I think your father needs to have his license revoked. It is detrimental to anyone's health not to eat (man or animal) especially when they're sick or recovering from surgery. He just doesn't like to clean up the mess and he doesn't want the added expense of dog/cat food. No your father sounds sadistic towards animals to me. His customers think he's great because they don't know he's starving their beloved pets while in his care. I think they need to know and so does the states licensing board. If you don't feel like turning him in, email me with his information and I'll do it for you.

We don't feed prior to surgery because it is dangerous for them to vomit while under sedation or anesthesia. Any other time, I don't see why not, unless they are hospitalized for vomiting in which case they can't eat anyway.

All our boarders, overnight patients, etc, if there's no contraindications (like vomiting) I don't register in my education any reason why fasting is better for the immune system. When fasting, the body will feed on white blood cells for energy, which weakens the immune system..

If I knew my vet was practicing this, I wouldnt use him..Thats kinda of cruel not feed them...Is he trying to save money of feed bills? But then your statement is counterdictive, about saying that other dogs stealing other dogs meals? Hmm.... something is wrong here.

I dont think your supposed to feed animals before surgery, I guess that is why he is a Vet and you are not.

it's not your fathers job to feed the animals. when the animals are at the vets they sometimes get an upset stomach and when you feed them, they'll just throw it up, its just a waste of food.
