I bought a 1987 Ranger Pickup with a 2.3L 4 banger. Has leaky rear main seal and very low compression. I bought a used 1992 Ranger 2.3L 4 cylinder. My intention was to strip the head and all the coilpac ignition and use the short block to replace my VERY leaky 1987 2.3. A friend of mine said, "Why don't you use the '92 engine as is. Run it with 4 plugs and leave the other ones alone. Remove the coilpac ignition and stick your old distributor in the hole where the dist is supposed to go and use your old coil. The oilpump is driven off the balance shaft and pump is still there." This is quite the idea...but...will it work? Has anyone out there tried it?
If this won't work and I have to strip the new ('92) block will I have to use new head bolts. The modified mini racecar drivers at our local dirt track say I can use the old bolts...but they have trouble with head gaskets sometimes. I won't be running that fast or furious. Any help?

I think it would work but I'd say reuse everything off of the 1987 in the way of intake and exhaust... and just keep an eye on those spark plugs on the dead side (for possible blowout)

As someone said, the 1992 was more emissions friendly and in places that inspect, the 1992 engine in the 1987 would make it forced to be emissions tested as a 1992.

and the head bolts can be reused but I think cheap insurance may be just to change them with new bolts to be safe.

I haven't tried it personally.. I'm just going by memory...

But another thing may be a head on your 1992 short block from a 2.3 industrial motor (as they only used 4 plugs)

The eight plug head and engine is more efficent. Mini stock guys don't have to worry about emissions.
