There are quite a few very good 42" LCD TVs on the market right now. As for the best that is a constant moving target!
If you stay in with the bigger brand names you should be just fine.
I have a Toshiba 42LZ196 1080p TV and it's of very good quality and the picture is great! When I was buying mine I looked at the Toshiba and the Sony 46" side by side and the Toshiba's picture blew the Sony out of the water.
Sony's are good TVs and I don't know if they have improved but most of the complaints I hear about them are they have quite a bit of Mosquito noise in the picture where the Toshiba was very smooth.
Go look around and see what you like. I'm sure in an afternoon you'll have a pretty good gauge as to what you like and don't and from there just narrow it down to Best Picture, Features and Budget then research them to help you decide.

I ended up buying a 42" Sony LCD HDTV, Grand Wega, HD Ready. I got an HD cable box for the HD signal, since that model did not have one in it. The newer model is Bravia( interface engine for good resolution in HD & Digital channels. The Bravia has 2 HDMI & 2 USB in-puts for a better selection of what you can connect to it. I think it's the best.

We would need to know if you plan to invest in a 1080P or a 720 P Many companies have good 720P l.C.D's only a few have quality 1080 L.C.D's. Sony's new 1080 is a 40" and it seems to be the best out there. It has a great standard definition picture, until they start offering more channels in H.D, this should be important to you .

maybe LG
no Maxon, Vizio, etc.
other than that it is PQ and that is for u to determine.
Personally, I don't like Samsung's color.
I also prefer Plasma and my Panasonic is unbelievable.
