It had nothing to do with being of a particular type. Samson from before he was born was set aside by God as his servant and the mother was told not to drink wine for that reason.
His hair was a hallmark of his status as servant. When that was cut off, he lost the status proclaiming him God's servant and God withdrew the status of approval and his spirit from Samson that enabled him, gave him strength. His strength was not his own. He might as well have been a small skinny person with no muscles at all -- the power came from God.
If you read the story, after his hair grew back, Samson besieged God to give him strength, and he got it.

His divinely provided strength was dependent on his continuing in unswerving devotion to God, and of this his long hair was a symbol. His strength lay in what that unshorn hair represented.
Samson fell in love with Delilah. For material gain she sought to learn the secret of Samson’s strength. Three times he gave her misleading answers. But, because of her persistent pestering, he finally gave in and revealed to her that his strength lay in his being a Nazirite from birth. She then got in touch with the Philistines to get the reward for turning him over to them. While Samson was sleeping on her knees, Delilah had his hair shaved off. Upon awakening, he no longer had God’s spirit, because he had allowed himself to get into a position that led to the termination of his Naziriteship.

I think Rapunzel was another fairytale similar to that. Rapunzel was Samson's little sister. She lived in a tower, locked away from GAWD, and her long fair locks of hair saved her from THE SATAN and brought her back into the shiny, happy light of THE GAWD!

The issue was that he made a vow not to cut his hair. So when it happened, he lost his strength and anointing.
